Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is an administrative region of southeastern France. It is often referred to by the acronym PACA. Its capital is Marseille.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is formed of six departments from the former provinces of Provence and the Dauphiné. Part of Vaucluse comes of Vaison in Vaucluse and the left bank of the Var, Alpes-Maritimes once was the County of Nice.
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in the south is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent to the east of the Italian regions of Liguria and Piedmont, which it is separated by the Southern Alps. It is bordered to the north by the Rhône-Alpes region and to the west by the Languedoc-Roussillon, the Rhone marking the regional border. Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur had in 2011 4 916 069 inhabitants, making it the third most populous French region. With a GDP per capita of â?¬ 28,861, it is also the third richest region.
The Var is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It borders the departments of Bouches-du-Rhône to the west, Vaucluse (a few hundred meters away), the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the north of the Alpes-Maritimes in the east, and is bathed by the Mediterranean sea to the south.
Var is formed from the County of Provence and is an area of ''6032 km2 with 420 km of coastline (islands included). It is divided into nine districts. It extended to the eponymous river, which was a border between France County Nice. But the addition in 1860 of the district of Grasse in the Alpes-Maritimes administrative geography has changed, so that today the Var river no longer flows in the department of the same name, but only those in the Alps out-of-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes! Var is the sole French department named after a geographical feature that is not present in its territory.
