Literally, the name may refer to the entire coast, but in everyday language, rather it refers to the northern half of the region. Under this definition, the east coast stretching from Maine to the city of Washington. This is the region of the country with the highest density of population, as it includes the major cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. It is sometimes objected to the west coast.
If the term is used in a strictly geographical sense, the coast is also contains the states of Virginia, the Carolinas (North and South), Georgia, and Florida. Yet the latter States are generally classified in the South (or East) instead of the east coast.
