Can I sail at night?
Updated on: 26/05/2025Legally, there is no prohibition against sailing at night; however, most rental companies refuse to allow it because their insurers refuse to cover them in the event of a nighttime accident. That is why we specify in our terms and conditions that you must agree not to sail at night. Indeed, at night, the risks are greater for both the crew and the boat. Obstacles (nets, unmarked objects, rocks) are not visible, and arriving at a shelter or port is much more difficult.
However, if the cruise you are planning involves night sailing (for example, a crossing from the French Riviera to Corsica, a long voyage in the Caribbean, etc.), this is possible with the written consent of the local charter company. To do so, you must notify us before making your reservation and provide your sailing resume in your Filovent account; we will then ask the charter company to verify your experience and grant their approval. In the Caribbean, for example, charter companies are generally willing to accept such requests, provided that departures and arrivals take place during daylight hours (as there are numerous rocks and obstacles near the coast).
