Venice (Venexia Venetian, Venezia in Italian), the city of Venice is a city in north-eastern Italy and the capital of the region of Veneto, in the Po Valley. Founded soon after 568, the capital for eight centuries (1001-1797) of one of the most prestigious European states: the Republic of Venice, the city is famous for its canals, St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace and its carnival. Venice had 268 934 inhabitants in late 2006.
Venice and its lagoon are listed as World Heritage.
