Region Liguria (Italian Regione Liguria), more commonly known as Liguria, a region of Italy is located in the northwest of the peninsula. Its name comes from the ancient Ligurian people, even if they occupied a much larger than the current Liguria territory. The regional capital is Genoa, which is also by far the most populous city.
Liguria form an arc around the Ligurian Sea. It is surrounded by the Alps and the Apennines. It is very open to the sea and largely mountainous region.
