Ostia, Italian or Ostia Antica Ostia (from the Latin meaning mouth), is an ancient Italian town in Lazio, located at the mouth of the Tiber, 35 miles southwest of Rome. Former bishop, she was famous for its salt marshes and its port, which hosted cargoes of grain, oil, wine and garum from the Roman world, including the provinces of Sicily, Egypt, Africa or Sardinia. His situation was all the more advantageous that unlike other Mediterranean rivers, the Tiber enjoyed amazing regularity allowing it to be navigable throughout the year. Ostia is not Ostia Lido.
