Taranto is an Italian city of about 200,000 inhabitants, capital of the province of the same name in Apulia.
Taranto is a port of southern Italy built on the Gulf of Taranto. The old town, la città Vecchia, or Borgo Antico, heir to the Spartan colony which was in ancient times one of the richest cities of Magna Graecia, was established on a rectangular island that control the channel of access to the harbor, called Mare Piccolo.
A metal swing bridge two stolen called Ponte Girevole, opened in 1887, gives passage to the navigation between the Gulf of Taranto and the harbor. This bridge is very similar to the old turn appointed National (1861) Brest, a city with which Taranto is twinned bridge deck.
