Volos is a major port, including the servicing of Sporades. It is the third port in Greece for freight traffic. The city is also an important industrial city. It hosts the University of Thessaly.
It is also the birthplace of the painter Giorgio De Chirico.
The city hosted the Olympic football tournament in 2004 it will host the Mediterranean Games in 2013.
