Messina is located at the northeastern tip of Sicily, on the western shore of the Strait of Messina between the Italian peninsula (the tip of Calabria) of Sicily. Reggio di Calabria is located on the other side of the inlet. Building a bridge between the two sides of the strait is planned.
It lies between the coast and the ionic Peloritani Mountains. The city has a natural harbor that is experiencing significant commercial and military activity.
The city grows mainly along the coast due to relatives inland hills. This specificity makes the city more "long" in the world.
