In the morning, domestic flight to Ushuaia. After breakfast and your excursion to discover Tierra... see+ del Fuego, the ship awaits you, moored at the foot of Ushuaia. The captain and crew welcome us aboard for our first night in the Antipodes. The end of the world is already reversing our perspectives: the city is tiny and the horizon immense. This evening, we set sail through the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego's most important maritime route - apart from the Strait of Magellan.

Ushuaia Drake Passage
On the agenda for this crossing is the cleaning of our expedition equipment to avoid spreading any... see+ dust or micro-fragments of foreign matter into the Deep South.
It's an opportunity to get to know our expedition team as we work together to preserve the White Continent from the impact of our arrival. Second moment: detailing our itinerary, while looking forward to the slightest opportunity to change it. Sailing in the ice always means letting yourself be surprised by the uncertainty that suddenly becomes possible.

Drake Passage Antarctic Peninsula
During these seven full days, the boat sails from marvel to marvel. Sea and weather conditions... see+ determine the captain's and expedition leader's decisions regarding our stopovers. In Gerlache Strait, a zodiac outing allows us to observe a whale-feeding session, while in Paradise Bay, the approach to a cliff gives us the chance to contemplate blue-eyed cormorants snorting on their nests in the dark rock. At Neko Harbour, a glacier calves icebergs before our very eyes. We can hear the ice melting into the sea with a sparkle worthy of a glass of champagne.

Antarctic Peninsula
Booth Island and Petermann Island were the wintering grounds of Jean-Baptiste Charcot (between 1905... see+ and 1909). In those days, crews marked their passage; the French built a cairn on a hill on Booth Island.
From here, Antarctica offers us the chance to contemplate an infinite "graveyard" of icebergs stranded on the shallows of a bay. Exploring this maze by zodiac confirms our sense of wonder. For many years, Petermann Island was home to the southernmost colony of Papuan penguins, a species accustomed to lower latitudes.
Climate change is breaking these habits. Antarctica, seemingly eternal, reveals itself to be sensitive to what is affecting the rest of the world. To feel this evolution, on the spot, is also to commit ourselves to curbing it, once back home.

Antarctic Peninsula
Will there soon be Papuan penguins beyond the Arctic Circle? We hope we won't have to face up to... see+ this sad fact, so that we can enjoy this mythical moment: the crossing of the line, that fantasized frontier beyond which the Pole seems to offer itself... even though it's still almost 3,000 km away! The boat sails into Crystal Sound, split in two by the Arctic Circle. Crystal or not, ice is everywhere: in glaciers carving out the Peninsula's valleys, in icebergs conversing with our ship. A peaceful dialogue thanks to the watchful eye of the deck crew, who allow us to share from the bridge the intensity of their task in a universe that is both hostile and beautiful.

Antarctic Peninsula
This is our southernmost day. Beyond, the maze of islands and icebergs between Adelaide Island and... see+ the mainland makes passage impossible. Charcot had found it. But the boat, despite its ice clearance, is wider than the Pourquoi Pas. Our captain and expedition leader take us as far as we've dreamed, while aiming for our safety.
On Detaille Island, British Station W has been unoccupied since 1966, but is well-preserved, with equipment emblematic of the scientific bases of the time. Only a few geodesy researchers came this far in the past. Oh, and the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who played tennis here.

At sea - Antarctica Falkland Islands
This "new island" is still relatively new, since it was only landed at the end of the 18th century.... see+ Its western facade, with cliffs cut by deep faults, is not accessible by sea, but by the other coast and by an inland path between tall grasses.

This is the route of our landing. From the top of the precipice, the sea roars geysers of spray towards us. A double colony of birds nests between grass and rocks: black-browed albatross and leaping gorfous. There's no greater contrast than between the former, sleek and elegant, their eyes as if delicately made-up; and the latter, stubborn, waving the tuft of yellow feathers bristling from their heads with every leap. The comings and goings of these "Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa of the Southern Ocean" inevitably trigger laughter and can fascinate for hours on end.

During your stopover at Sea Lion, immerse yourself in the natural splendor of the unspoiled coastline, meet the marine wildlife and discover the rich history of this archipelago. An unforgettable getaway where adventure and wonder come together in harmony.
