After iron-rich springs were discovered in the mid-18th century, hotels and sanatoriums quickly sprang up across the landscape. In 1920, the town (then simply Schandau) was granted the right to use the prefix “Bad,” meaning “Spa.” During World War II, it was a place of hope for refugees and emigrants. Many were rescued by mountaineers familiar with secret paths through the mountains who helped lead them out of Germany.

Sail through the breathtaking rock formations of Saxon Switzerland. This spectacular region owes its name to two Swiss painters who were reminded of their homeland during a visit.
