Strasbourg Waltenheim

Waltenheim Saverne
Morning navigation on the Marne-Rhine Canal, enjoying the beautiful landscapes passing before your... see+ eyes. Gently winding or at times straight, the canal weaves through villages, fields, and forests. In the distance, you’ll glimpse the first peaks of the Vosges. Arrival in Saverne early in the afternoon. Visit to the Château du Haut-Barr, known as the "Eye of Alsace." This medieval castle in ruins, dating back to the 12th century, occupies a strategic position between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain. The current castle was built in 1583 by Johann von Manderscheid. The Devil’s Bridge footbridge, accessible by stairs, connects two rocks and is renowned for its legend. Crossing it is particularly striking. Return to the boat.

Evening of tarte flambée, a local specialty, at a restaurant in Saverne. The birthplace of tarte flambée, Alsace saw this traditional dish emerge from farmhouses. Once considered a humble meal, it is now beloved by gourmet enthusiasts. Don’t forget—it’s best enjoyed with your hands.

Saverne Lutzelbourg
In the morning, guided tour of Saverne. This charming town at the foot of the Vosges Mountains is... see+ well worth a visit. Built on a hill, it hides some unsuspected treasures. Among them is the Katz House, adorned with magnificent half-timbered carvings of nude figures, floral, and geometric motifs. Strolling through the town, whether along the water's edge or on its cobbled streets, is a delight. Once known as an "impregnable city," Saverne adopted the Unicorn as its emblem, symbolizing purity and courage.

Return to the boat. Afternoon navigation toward Lutzelbourg. Nestled in the forest, the canal flows gently to the rhythm of nature. A few lock passages will add charm to the journey. Arrival in Lutzelbourg late in the afternoon. Upon arrival, hike to the Château de Lutzelbourg (we recommend sturdy walking shoes). The ruins of this castle, a true sentinel of pink sandstone, have overlooked the village since the 11th century and offer visitors a breathtaking panorama of the valley. Return to the boat.

Lutzelbourg Xouaxange
You will make a stop at the glassworks. Established for 25 years near the inclined plane, the... see+ glassworks will unveil the secrets of glassblowing. You can watch artisans demonstrating glassblowing and cutting techniques. The glassmaking craft has a long history in Lorraine. During the Middle Ages, numerous glassworks operated in the wooded areas of the Vosges Mountains. This unique artistic heritage is renowned worldwide. Return to the boat.

Navigation toward Xouaxange, passing through the Arzviller inclined plane. This remarkable boat lift allows vessels to cross the Vosges Mountains. It replaces a sequence of 17 locks over 4 km that previously required an entire day of navigation. Built in the 1960s, it hoists a barge weighing several hundred tons in just 4 minutes—an impressive feat.

Candlelit lunch while passing through the canal tunnels.

Departure for a visit to the Chagall Trail in Sarrebourg. A major 20th-century artist and a close friend of Picasso, Marc Chagall was a painter of "surreality." His work, imbued with a sacred aura, draws inspiration from the Jewish traditions of his childhood. The Cordeliers Chapel houses a radiant stained-glass window by Marc Chagall. This exceptional masterpiece transforms the 13th-century monument. As for Sarrebourg, the town stands out for its unique position in a region defined to the east and south by the Vosges and to the north and west by the Lorraine plateau and its ponds.
