Berlin, founded in 1237, is still a young city compared to other European metropolises, but its history is extraordinary. The German capital was born in 1307 from the merger of two cities: Berlin and Cölln. Berlin became the royal residence following the... see+ accession to the throne of Frederick III, crowned Frederick I in 1701. But it was during the reign of Frederick II that the architectural reorganization of the city began, with classical buildings designed by architects Knobelsdorf and Schinkel giving the city a new look. The National Socialist dictatorship and World War II reduced the city to ruins. On August 13, 1961, construction began on the Berlin Wall, which separated the city and its population until its destruction on November 9, 1989. Since then, Berlin, once again the capital of Germany, has continued to change and evolve. Depart by bus from Berlin-Spandau to discover the German capital in the company of a local guide, who will spend three hours introducing you to the history, monuments, and many facets of this historic city. You will travel up17 June Avenue, which will take you to the famous Victory Column on the side of the boat, next to which stands a statue of Bismarck, then to the Brandenburg Gate adjacent to the Reichstag and its glass dome. You will arrive at the famous Unter den Linden boulevard and reach Museum Island, home to Berlin's five most prestigious museums, including the Pergamon Museum andthe Altes Museum, which houses the bust of Nefertiti. Behind Museum Island and its classical buildings lies the modern Alexanderplatz and its famous television tower. Passing by Gendarmenmarkt, you will head towards Checkpoint Charlie, the former crossing point between the Russian and American zones of Berlin... This is just a glimpse, but you will discover many other monuments that make Berlin one of the most cultural cities in Europe. NOTES The tour is mainly by bus with photo stops. Depending on the guide, there may be small steps and the order of visits may be changed. Times are given as a guide only.
Not included $82 / pers.
Depart by coach accompanied by local guides who will introduce you to the history of ancient Prussia and its illustrious monarchs. In Potsdam, the tour will begin with a stroll through the gardens of Sanssouci, where you will walk up the flower-lined paths... see+ and stairs leading to the large terrace, where Frederick II, known as the Great, had his summer residence, Sanssouci Palace, built between 1745 and 1747. Frederick II lived there carefree, relaxing far from the solemnities of the Berlin court. The king's personal tastes had such an influence on the design and decoration that it is sometimes referred to as "Frederician Rococo." Then, you will tour Sanssouci Park by bus to admire its many amazing buildings. You will also pass by the Alexandrowka colony, with its Russian-style chalets, which was created in 1826-27 at the request of Frederick William III in memory of his deceased friend Tsar Alexander I. The first inhabitants of this colony were members of a Russian choir. Finally, head to Potsdam city center to enjoy some free time in the Dutch quarter.NOTESBe sure to wear good walking shoes: there is a walk in the Sans Souci gardens with stairs to climb. In the Amsterdam-Berlin direction, the boat sails during the excursion. There is no planned visit to the interior of the palaces in Sanssouci Park. This is exclusively a tour of the gardens. The order of visits may be changed. The times given are for information only.

Departure by coach to Magdeburg, where we will meet up with local guides. Magdeburg was once the cradle of the German nation. The first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto the Great, built an imposing cathedral there and elevated the city to the rank of archbishopric.... see+ Magdeburg became a center of Western Christianity and the High Court of Justice in the Middle Ages. You will begin with a visit to Magdeburg Cathedral, the first Gothic cathedral built on German soil, which houses not only the tomb of Emperor Otto the Great but also a number of curiosities, including a charming cloister. The city, located on Saxony-Anhalt's "Romanesque Road," also boasts several other religious buildings: the Cloister of Our Lady, St. Peter's Church, St. John's Church, St. Mary Magdalene Chapel, and more. You will continue with a panoramic tour of the city and discover Magdeburg's second major attraction, the green citadel designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser, which, strangely enough, is not green but candy pink! You will see this former GDR city, rebuilt in a "Soviet" style with gray, living area buildings, but embellished with moldings and reliefs. You will reach the market square where you can admire the Magdeburg Horseman, a golden equestrian statue representing Otto I; the Town Hall and its bronze portal; and the memorial to Otto von Guericke, known for inventing the vacuum pump (Magdeburg hemispheres experiment). The tour will end with some free time before returning to the boat. NOTES We are in former East Germany, very few guides speak French, so the guide may be accompanied by a translator. Depending on the water level on the Elbe, the boat may not be able to pitch in Magdeburg and will stop at the Rothensee lock. After the tour and free time, the return to the side of the boat will be either by bus or by foot, depending on the navigation and water level of the Elbe. The boat will be sailing during the excursion. The order of visits may be changed. Times are given as a guide only.

Many objects that belonged to Luther are on display, as well as portraits and other paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger. Luther's house has been a museum since 1883.
