Departure by coach from Chioggia to Padua. Padua, probably best known as the city of St. Anthony, is one of Italy's most important cities of art. Giotto (1267-1337, Italian painter, sculptor, and architect) left some of his masterpieces in Padua, enriching... see+ the city's artistic landscape. You will start with a bus tour of the city, then visit the Church of St. Anthony, a huge basilica decorated with Byzantine domes and minaret towers. It houses the tomb of St. Anthony, a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world. In the square in front of the church, you can admire Donatello's 15th-century bronze statue, a work of art that greatly influenced Italian Renaissance sculpture. A walking tour of the city center will take you to the Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, where a fresh produce market is held every day. You will then see the Palazzo della Ragione (exterior) and Piazza dei Signori with the Palazzo del Capitano (exterior), which incorporates the Torre dell'Orologio and its astronomical clock dating from 1344. You will have free time to visit this small but charming town at your leisure. Return to the side of the boat in Venice. NOTES The order of visits may be changed. Times are given as a guide only. Please bring good walking shoes.
Not included $83 / pers.
Meet the guides at the boat. The tour will begin with a historical and artistic introduction to Venice at St. Mark's Square, followed by a visit to the famous St. Mark's Cathedral (exterior). The Byzantine-style facades of the cathedral (one of the most... see+ magnificent in the world) will immediately catch your eye. It was originally built in the 9th century to house the body of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. Only a few traces of the original structure remain, and the monument in its current state dates from the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries. The exterior, with its domes, pinnacles, and wooden horses, contrasts with the sparkling gold mosaics of the interior. The tour continues with the Doge's Palace, residence of the Dukes of Venice and seat of the Venetian government from the 9th century until the fall of the Republic in 1797. Although there are no traces of the 9th-century Byzantine structures, the current palace, richly decorated both inside and out, dates from the 14th century and is considered by many to be the most beautiful in the world. A visit to the top of the famous golden staircase will allow you to admire paintings by Tintoretto and Veronese, stroll through the large council chamber and step out onto the pulpit to enjoy a magnificent view. You will cross the famous decorated footbridge, the Bridge of Sighs, which leads to the prison. The deck, once known as the image of the fate it accorded prisoners, is now a symbol of romanticism. Return to the foot of the boat on foot. NOTES The order of visits may be changed. Times are given as a guide only. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
Not included $103 / pers.
The Venetian lagoon, created by the estuaries of three rivers and separated from the Adriatic Sea by a helm of fine sand, is approximately 52 km long. Venice is located in the center of around fifty other islands in this lagoon. Almost half of them are... see+ abandoned, and the two predominant islands in the north are Murano and Burano. The cruising houseboat will start at the Cornoldi pier and you will have the opportunity to visit these two islands. Murano, the island of glass production, offers visitors the opportunity to see a master glassmaker at work. In 1291, when furnaces were banned in Venice to protect the city from fires, glass manufacturing was transferred to Murano. The 16th century was known as the "golden age" of Murano glass, as at that time the island was home to 37 factories and 30,000 inhabitants. Glassmaking was one of Venice's first exports, and the secrets of this craft were closely guarded. Glass production was considered a privilege, and its artisans were allowed to marry into the nobility. Today, glassmaking is no longer a secret, and blown glass mirrors, chandeliers, goblets, and other intricate art objects are renowned throughout the world. The next island you will visit is Burano. Brightly painted houses adorn this charming fishing village. The sides of the boat are full of sea bream and the site is picturesque. Burano is well known for its lace production; in the 16th century, this industry was at its peak and Burano was famous throughout Europe for producing the finest lace. In order to preserve the production of traditional lace, a school was established; although it is no longer very popular today, the production of this lace is still practiced by some women on the island. You will also have some free time to explore Burano at your own pace; getting lost in the streets is a real pleasure. Return to the side of the boat. NOTES The order of visits may be changed. Times are given as a guide only. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
