Sailing itineraries

Longyearbyen
Your High Arctic experience begins with a first stop in Spitsbergen, the largest of the three main... see+ islands in the Svalbard archipelago. Discover magnificent mountains overlooking the High Arctic tundra, and rivers of slush trickling over the valley plains, shimmering in the summer sunshine.
Simply take the time to feel here, now, in Spitsbergen. You're at a latitude of over 78°N, 1,500 km south of the North Pole. The air is pure and fresh. The overall summer temperature is mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream.
You'll make your own way to Longyearbyen, Svalbard's largest settlement, home to some 2,000 people from all over the world. Founded in 1906, it was originally a colony for coal mining. Today, the town attracts not only modern adventurers, but also scientists and engineers involved in local research projects, such as the famous World Seed Reserve.
Your ship awaits you in the harbor. In the evening, the ship heads north to your next destination: Ny-Ålesund.

Longyearbyen Ny Alesund
Rise early for impressive views of Kongsfjord, one of the region's largest fjords. Its entrance is... see+ guarded by two colossal glaciers that regularly pour ice into the fjord.

This stretch of coastline also lends itself to the observation of walruses basking on the shore and numerous species of migratory birds, including puffins, king eiders, pink-footed geese and guillemots.

Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer can be seen on land, while beluga whales sometimes surface. If we're lucky, we might even see a polar bear prowling the coastline in search of bearded and ringed seals.

At the tip of the Brøgger peninsula, on one of the shores of Kongsfjord, lies Ny-Ålesund. Like Longyearbyen, this former coal mine has been home to scientific stations since the mid-20th century. In summer, over a hundred researchers live in the town, spread across 20 glaciology and climate institutes from more than 10 countries.

Explore one of the world's most northerly communities, drop by the local museum and gift store, or send a postcard to your loved ones from the small post office at the end of the world.

Or take a guided tour of the Amundsen monument, erected here in honor of the illustrious Norwegian explorer's historic flight to reach the North Pole in 1926. Aboard the Norge, Amundsen took off from Ny-Ålesund and landed in Alaska three days later, achieving this feat by flying over the North Pole.

Duration of stopover in Ny-Ålesund: 04h00

Ny Alesund Senja
Unfortunately, it's time to leave the Svalbard archipelago and Spitsbergen.

Take advantage of... see+ this day to relax on board the ship. If the skies are clear, soak up the summer sun on deck and keep an eye out for whales, dolphins and porpoises. Or, if the air remains a little chilly, opt for the sauna and its soothing steam.

They may also offer photography workshops to help you get the best shots over the next few days.

Enjoy quality food and drink on board with our Norway's Coastal Kitchen concept, the Norwegian culinary experience featuring Norway's finest and most fragrant local produce. Perhaps our experienced chefs from the open kitchen on board will surprise you with tastings of regional specialties or demonstrations.

Or simply curl up with a good book in the lounge, or enjoy a drink at the bar with your new friends, reminiscing about the experiences that have made the biggest impression on you so far.

Senja
After a day at sea, we're back on the Norwegian mainland.

The first stop of the day is Tromsø,... see+ to drop off any cargo from Spitsbergen and to pick up cargo bound for southern ports, before continuing south to Senja. This island, one of the country's largest and Northern Norway's flagship destination, is undergoing rapid development, not surprisingly since CNN has ranked it among the ten most beautiful islands in the world.

Locals often proudly refer to the island as “mini Norway”. Indeed, Senja boasts a concentration of varied landscapes reflecting the different parts of the Norwegian coast, from the sandy beaches, turquoise waters and high peaks of the north coast to the rocky coastline and pine forests of southern Senja and Ånderdalen National Park. To the east, you'll discover rolling landscapes covered in birch forests.

Disembark in the charming fishing village of Torsken and explore the surrounding area by bus, electric bike or on foot, or take an optional fjord safari.

Duration of stopover in Torsken: 06h00

Optional services: Panoramic tour of Torsken by electric bike, Senja wildlife safari, see+

Senja Svolvaer
The day begins with a few hours in the historic town of Stokmarknes, which has sentimental value... see+ for us. You'll be plunged into another era on one of our out-of-service ships from 1956, the MS Finnmarken, proudly docked under a glass building.
After Stokmarknes, we're off to the Lofoten Islands via Raftsundet Strait and Trollfjord. The rest of the day is devoted to exploring this splendid archipelago. With jagged green cliffs jutting dramatically out of the ocean and cutting into the sky like giant teeth, you'll understand why the Lofoten Islands are among Norway's most extraordinary places.
Your ship will be moored in Svolvær, the archipelago's main town. Enjoy its stores and restaurants, and spend hours exploring the town at your leisure.
Choose from our excellent selection of hand-picked excursions to discover the mountains, islands and villages around Svolvær. Go fishing, kayaking or just relax and enjoy the incredible scenery on foot or by bus.
Duration of stopover in Stokmarknes: 02h00 and in Svolvær: 04h00

Optional services: Landscapes of Lofoten and Henningsvær, see+

Svolvaer Bronnoysund
The ship continues south to reach the midpoint of the Norwegian coast. This is the Helgeland... see+ coastline, an area renowned for its recognizable mountains, which have inspired local folklore and many fascinating myths.

As you sail, take in the Vega archipelago, comprising some 6,500 islands, islets and reefs. The island of Gardsøy is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the secrets of harvesting the precious down of eider ducks are explained, thanks to the installation of small huts where the local ducks build their nests.

The ship will anchor in the town of Brønnøysund, with its pretty marina and neo-Gothic stone church dating from 1870. Take the opportunity to explore the town, or join optional excursions including kayaking, biking or a semi-rigid boat trip.

As we move away from Brønnøysund, the atypical Torghatten mountain comes into view. The first thing you'll notice about Torghatten is the hole in the center of the mountain. Legend has it that this hole was pierced by a bitter troll's arrow aimed at his bride, and that Torghatten Mountain itself is the petrified hat that a troll king threw to intercept the arrow.

At a leisurely pace, it takes about an hour to reach Torghatten Hole on an optional excursion. The panoramic view of the trees and islands unfolding before you is well worth the effort.

Duration of stopover in Brønnøysund: 4h00

Optional services: Hiking in Torghatten, see+

Bronnoysund Alesund Hjorundfjord
The ship will make a brief stopover in Ålesund, known for its Art Nouveau architecture and... see+ exceptional location on a peninsula dominated by Mount Aksla. If you're taking the shore excursion to Hjørundfjord and Sæbø, this is where you'll disembark, or explore the town on foot.
Not far from Ålesund, the magnificent Hjørundfjord winds its way between the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, some of which rise to 1,700 meters. Set in the sublime setting of the Sunnmøre Alps, it's the region's hidden treasure and a secret that eludes many a ship.
The idyllic village of Sæbø lies on the banks of one of the arms of the Hjørundfjord. Disembark here by boat and join an optional bus tour or walking excursion to discover Sæbø's charming streets, fjord and mountain scenery, neighboring villages and local culture. If you've left the ship for an excursion to Ålesund, this is also where you'll return to the ship.

The last day of our trip is fast approaching. What better way to celebrate our experience on board the Spitsbergen Line than with a farewell dinner on the last evening?

Duration of stopover in Ålesund: 02h00 and in Sæbø: 04h00

Optional services: Discovery of the town of Alesund, see+

Hjorundfjord Bergen
We arrive in the morning in Bergen, a beautiful city on the west coast of Norway. Legendary,... see+ majestic peaks surround the city, giving Bergen its nickname of “City of Seven Mountains”.

It's time to disembark and make your own way back to the airport, but not before bidding farewell to your fellow passengers and the crew, without whom your trip aboard the Spitsbergen Line would not have had the same flavor. You may also choose to extend your stay in Norway.

On this historic and iconic voyage, you've explored corners of paradise on the Norwegian coast that you won't soon forget. If you took part in optional excursions, you're sure to have photos of yourself fishing, kayaking, hiking or biking, in some of the world's most beautiful landscapes.

We know you'll have fond memories of this trip, and we wish you a safe journey home. That was the Spitsbergen Line. We look forward to seeing you on board our ships.

Activities

Join a local guide for an invigorating evening tour of Senja on an electric bike. Partly powered by electricity, these bikes are more powerful and easier to use than conventional bikes, so even the climbs won't tire you out. The days are much longer in the... see+ Arctic summer, giving us plenty of time to visit the islands.

We'll leave Hamn and take the old Gryllefjordbotn road up to the Ballsvikskardet viewpoint, where we'll stop to admire the panorama. Admire the fjord and surrounding mountains, perhaps illuminated by the gentle glow of the evening sun.

We'll then head back down the old road on the other side before returning to Hamn. Time permitting, we'll also visit the magnificent beach of Ballsevika.

Not included
Disembark at Finnsnes and enjoy a short bus tour of this historic fishing village and former trading station, Hamn, on the island of Senja. Before setting off on your safari, you'll discover the history of the coastal people who live in Hamn through the... see+ anecdotes that will be told to you.

The boat then takes you to turquoise waters, lush islands and white coral beaches. Along the coast of Norway's second-largest island, you'll see eagles, seals and even colonies of elegant cormorants.

This idyllic, colorful and unspoilt place is often referred to as the “Caribbean of the North”. An evening excursion will allow you to admire a magnificent sunset. At the height of summer, you can expect to see the Midnight Sun low in the sky, just above a horizon of islets and reefs. In any case, don't forget your camera!

The tour starts in Svolvær, unofficially the capital of Lofoten. Here you can admire Svolværgeita, a 150-metre-high stone peak on the Fløyfjellet mountain. Popular with mountaineers, this iconic peak is famous for its goat-like appearance, with two horns... see+ protruding from its summit.

We'll take the scenic route to Henningsvær, passing by Vågan Church, a monumental wooden church north of Trondheim. On the way to our destination, we'll have the sea on one side and a sheer rock face on the other. Keep your camera handy to immortalize all the summer beauty of the region's landscapes.

Once in Henningsvær, you'll have the opportunity to explore world-class art galleries like the Galleri Lofoten. Here you'll find the world's largest collection of 20th-century Norwegian paintings from the period considered the “Golden Age of Northern Land Art”.

Before reaching Svolvær, we stop off at the SKREI Heritage Centre, which houses the Lofoten Museum, the Espolin Art Gallery and the Lofoten Aquarium. At the Lofoten Museum, you'll learn how the region's fishermen and landowners have lived over the centuries, before discovering unique portraits of the locals at the Lofoten Gallery. Take a tour of the aquarium to admire its array of marine animals, including seals, otters and, of course, the famous cod or “skrei”, for which the center is named.
