Porto Régua
Portugal’s second-largest city, battered by the rising tide of the Atlantic Ocean, is a bustling... see+ metropolis. Yet this port city has retained a certain charm. To discover it is to immerse yourself in its daily life—in the maze of stairways and alleyways lined with laundry, and in the bustling market halls teeming with people. The walls, illuminated by the beauty of the “azulejos”—those typical blue ceramic tile murals—tell the story of the city’s life, past, and beliefs in the Ribeira neighborhood.

In the morning, optional excursion: Porto and a visit to an azulejo workshop. Departure by bus to downtown Porto. Visit the Church of St. Francis (interior), just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Douro River; it is one of Porto’s most iconic religious buildings. Proceed to the Stock Exchange Palace (interior). Tour this magnificent 19th-century mansion located in the heart of the city’s historic center, a marvel of neoclassical architecture steeped in history. Next, you’ll visit an azulejo workshop. The magnificent azulejo tiles you’ll see in Porto and throughout Portugal are the result of an art form with a long history in the country, dating back to the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Deriving their name from the Arabic word “Zellige”—meaning “polished stone”—these tiles and mosaics are painted and adorned with botanical, animal, and historical motifs in shades of blue and white. This is a unique opportunity to discover this ancient art form.

Return to the boat. Afternoon cruise. You’ll sail through the Douro Valley. Flanked by vineyards for nearly 200 km, the “Golden River” reveals itself to travelers, showcasing its wild and unspoiled natural beauty. To tame the river, dams and locks regulate its flow. You’ll pass through the massive Carrapatelo lock, the highest in Europe, with a 35-meter drop.

Arrival in Régua in the evening. Overnight stop. Dance party or evening stroll (optional).

Located on the side of the Douro, this museum—which blends tradition and modernity—offers a glimpse into the fascinating history of the Douro and the winemaking methods of this beautiful region. Return to the ship in Pinhão.

Afternoon cruise to Vega de Terron. You’ll sail through the heart of Porto’s most famous vineyards, where people have carved out the mountains to create undulating terraces covered in vines.
