islands on the windward side: a close-up look at the places you absolutely must not miss

Tahiti, the mother island

World-renowned, Tahiti is the largest and most dynamic island in the Polynesian archipelagos. Treat yourself to the luxury of sailing for hours in its exceptionally clear lagoons and admire its mountainous and volcanic landscapes. You should also visit its capital, Papeete: its famous covered market, the Notre-Dame cathedral, the Bougainville park, the Vai'ete square and the Pa'ofa'i gardens. For a feast for the eyes, rent a boat in Papeete and sail around the island. In the north and east of the island, admire the volcanic black sand beaches, such as Pointe Vénus and Papenoo. The contrast of colors is simply splendid. in the west, there are some rare, heavenly beaches such as Vaivaa. This island is also home to Teahupoo beach, known worldwide as the most dangerous surf spot in the world, with waves up to 10 meters high. Let yourself be lulled by the sound of the blowhole: it is an underwater cave into which the ocean rushes, producing an impressive whooshing sound. Next to the land and mountains, there are 5 valleys that are easily accessible on foot: Papenoo, Fautaua, Tuauru, Punaruu and Vahiria.

Moorea, the magical island

The island of Moorea is a little corner of paradise lost in the middle of dizzying peaks and turquoise blue lagoons, easily accessible thanks to a sailboat charter in French Polynesia. The Belvédère Lookout is a must-see, offering one of the most beautiful panoramas on the island with a breathtaking view of Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. In the center of the island, various hiking trails are beacons, such as those of Mount Rotui, the Magic Mountain or the Three Coconut Palms Trail. Moorea is best known for its magnificent white sandy beaches, Temae beach being by far the most beautiful on the island: a haven of peace with a glimpse of Tahiti in the distance, coconut palms along the shore and an open-air aquarium thanks to the crystal-clear water. Follow the Pineapple Route, typical of this island, where you can gaze at fields as far as the eye can see. The island also offersa wealth of water sports. For example, rent a kayak to observe schools of rays and sharks swimming close-hauled. Located on a motu, a small local islet, the Lagoonarium of Moorea is also a must for a relaxing day: snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing… this place even offers an underwater trail to admire the corals and local fauna. Incredible!

Maiao, the forbidden island

Formerly off-limits to foreign tourists, the island of Maiao is gradually opening up to tourism and modernity, even if it is still prohibited for foreign tourists to stay there for more than 48 hours. Administratively attached to Moorea, it takes just 4 hours to sail to the forgotten island. During a sailboat charter in French Polynesia, take advantage of its beaches and hiking trails. The inhabitants would like to further develop the still timid tourism on this island in order to develop the territory economically.

Mehetia, the secret island

Located 110 km east of Tahiti, Mehetia is the youngest island in French Polynesia. With a surface area of only 2.3 km², it is nevertheless home to a mountain 435 meters high. The island of Mehetia is now deserted and very difficult to berth at. Ferns, shrubs and rare coconut palms cover the island. It has the appearance of a forgotten city, but the presence of numerous marae and coral remains bear witness to an ancestral life. This island is therefore full of mysteries, a fascinating place for lovers of unusual discoveries.

Tetiaroa Atoll, a bird's paradise

Tetiaroa Atoll, an almost submerged ancient volcano, is located 50 km north of Tahiti and is an essential day stopover on your Polynesian cruise in the Windward Islands. For the record, Tetiaroa is particularly famous for having been owned by the actor Marlon Brando. because the atoll is completely enclosed, you have to access it by hauling a dinghy in at the side of your boat. After a stroll through the coconut grove, countless swims in a small freshwater lake and a natural pool with translucent waters… you will finally reach Tetiaroa bird island (Tahuna Iti Ten Polynésien) where you will have the chance to admire, from the side of the boat, a wide variety of birds that nest on this islet, a spectacular and timeless moment.

Finally, set off to discover the Îles du vent during the dry season, which runsfrom April to October, to avoid the rainy season at all costs. Mild temperatures between 24 and 28 degrees will help you to fully enjoy your extraordinary trip. Another important piece of information is that French Polynesia is also known forits cetacean watching, and whale season runs from July to November.

Experience the magic of the Windward Islands from the side of your boat and succumb to the wonders of these distant, paradisiacal lands! Bon voyage or 'Ia maita'i te terera'a as the Polynesians would say!
