Antalya is today the tourist capital of the Mediterranean coast, nicknamed the "Turkish Riviera". The old town of Antalya, Kaleici, stretches along the side of a steep cliff, at the bottom of which nestles its old port, now a modern marina where our sailboat charter base is located.
To the west, you can sail to the magnificent beaches of Konyaalti, where the lush coastal vegetation (citrus, peaches, apricots, figs, olives, bananas) and the Taurus Mountains form a magnificent backdrop.
Your historical break in Antalya
Antalya partly owes its reputation to its rich historical heritage. When considering yacht charter in Antalya, it is important to pay attention to its architecture and its remains, which convey several centuries of history. A history deeply marked by the Ottoman Empire, as evidenced by its historic center, Kaleici, which overlooks the old port, now transformed into a marina. Built on the side of a cliff, the old town of Antalya is bordered by a high fortified wall housing charming Ottoman houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Ottoman wooden houses are recognizable by their magnificent white facades that open onto flower-filled patios.
The history of Antalya can also be discovered in the square of the Clock Tower, which is the symbol of the seaside resort. It is the fluted minaret of the Yivili mosque, built in 1230 and over 35 meters high. Other historical gems, such as the truncated minaret, are also worth a visit. Also known as the Cumanun Mosque, the truncated minaret alone brings together the Byzantine and ancient eras. The Port of Hadrian is also worth a visit. This majestic white marble triumphal arch was built in honor of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the year 130 and offers a beautiful panorama over the rooftops of the city and the bay of Antalya.
Antalya's glorious and eventful past also seems to have left some traces outside the city. About twenty kilometers from the town is the famous archaeological site of Perge. Built by the Greeks, this ancient city became a Roman possession in 133 BC. The Romans erected several monuments there, such as the Greco-Roman theater, which dates back to the 2nd century. You will also find some remains of this ancient Greco-Roman city on the side of the Antalya Archaeological Museum, considered the most beautiful in Turkey.
Antalya: a real seaside resort
Antalya also seems to be well equipped for beachgoers and cruise enthusiasts. Like most of the cities hauled in side of the boat by the Mediterranean, Antalya benefits from 300 days of sunshine per annum and remains a destination of choice for those fond of nautical leisure activities such as rafting or diving. For swimming and relaxing by the sea, Konyaalti beach is the place to go, less than 5 km west of the port. Its multicolored pebbles caressed by a turquoise sea with the Taurus mountain range as a backdrop will leave you speechless. For families, Konyaalti beach is the best choice because of its proximity to the Aquarium and Aqualand Antalya water park, a must for those who love waterfalls and slides.
For yachtsmen, Antalya will be an interesting point of departure for reaching other seaside resorts such as Öören, Bodrum or Kemer, which conceals some charming wild coves between the sea and the foothills of the mountains. Following the eastern coast of Antalya, you will reach the seaside resort of Belek, renowned for its immense golf courses and white sandy beaches.
