Salina is one of the seven islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago. With an area of ''26.8 km ², it is the second largest island of the archipelago both for its size and its population. It is divided into three municipalities: Santa Marina Salina, Malfa and Leni for a total population of 2300 inhabitants. Formed by six former volcanoes, it has the highest reliefs of the archipelago. The "Fossa delle Felci" Mountain, which rises to 961 meters above sea level and Mount "Monte dei Porri" 860 m, retained the typical conical shape. These two extinct volcanoes drift the ancient Greek name of the island Didymus which means twins. The current name, however, derives from a small lake in which salt was extracted.
