Abu Simbel Kasr Ibrim Amada
Pick-up by our local partner and visit to the temple of Abu Simbel. Champollion said, "This great... see+ temple alone is worth the trip to Nubia." This comment perfectly sums up the splendor of the site. Guests will learn how the temples were saved. Our guide will explain the history and power of Ramses II, which cannot fail to impress visitors given the grandeur of this marvel. The Great Temple of Abu Simbel is a hypostyle hall located in Abu Simbel, Egypt. It is dedicated to the worship of Amun, Ra, Ptah, and the deified Ramses II. Most of it is carved out of rock, including the facade composed of four colossal statues of Ramses II seated, as well as other statues, bas-reliefs, and friezes. The parts not carved out of rock are a peribolos and a pylon made of Nile mud bricks. Originally carved into the hill of Meha in Nubia, it was moved along with the small temple at the top of the original cliff to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. In order to recreate the original site, the temple is covered with a hollow artificial hill.

Welcome and boarding after the visit to Abu Simbel. Navigation to Qasr Ibrim, stopping near the ruins of the Qasr Ibrim fortress. This fortified city occupied the plateau of a sandstone massif on the eastern bank of the Nile, about 80 m high. It dominated the Aniba plain (west bank) and its administrative center, the residence of the viceroys of Nubia under Egyptian rule. Today, the Upper Dam reservoir has eroded about sixty meters of the hill, no longer making Qasr Ibrim the stronghold of antiquity. Located 240 km from Aswan and 50 km from the Sudanese border, Qasr Ibrim dominated Lower Nubia for three millennia. As access to the site is not always possible, our guide will explain its history from the deck of the boat. We will then resume our journey and spend the night in Amada.

Amada Wadi el Seboua
After breakfast, visit the Amada site*, its temple, the Temple of Derr, and the tomb of... see+ Pennout.
The visit to the Amada site is particularly enriching thanks to its temple, which was moved in one single block during the construction of the dam, a feat made possible through the efforts of Christiane Desroches Noblecourt, a French archaeologist specializing in Egyptology. Our guide will provide full explanations on the technique used. In the naos of the Temple of Derr, “the little Abu Simbel,” guests can recreate the miracle of Abu Simbel.
At the end of the visit, guests will enjoy a traditional Nubian coffee** and see a lake crocodile up close**.

The Temple of Amada: This structure, dedicated to Amun and Re-Horakhty, was built under Thutmose III and his son Amenhotep II (sanctuary and vestibule). Thutmose IV added the hypostyle hall, and Seti I the pylon. Seti I and his son Ramses II later contributed some restorations and decorations.

The rock-cut Temple of Derr (originally on the east bank): This 33-meter-long speos was built under Ramses II during the second half of his reign and is dedicated to Amun-Re. Its layout and orientation are identical to those of Abu Simbel, except for its smaller scale and absence of colossal statues. In the sanctuary, one can observe the same seated deities in the niche: Re-Horakhty, deified Ramses II, Amun-Re, and Ptah.

The funerary chapel of the Viceroy of Nubia, Pennout: “Royal son of Kush” under Ramses VI (20th Dynasty), Pennout was buried at Aniba, on the west bank opposite Qasr Ibrim. His tomb contains only a single room.

Navigation resumes toward Wadi es-Sebua*, which you will visit after lunch.
Site of Wadi es-Sebua: A unique visit to these jewels saved from the waters. Accompanied by our guide, you will walk between lake and desert from one temple to another, arriving at the Temple of Dakka and admiring its panoramic setting.

The Temple of Wadi es-Sebua: Built between year 35 and year 50 of Ramses II’s reign, this is the third rock-cut temple (hemispeos) the pharaoh had constructed in Nubia. The Temple of Amun, also called “Temple of Ramses-Beloved-of-Amun-in-the-Domain-of-Amun,” served as a resting place for the sacred barque during its journey down the Nile. The Arabs, inspired by the lion-bodied stone sphinxes guarding the central alley, named the site Wadi es-Sebua, the Valley of the Lions.

The Temple of Meharraka: This unfinished chapel dates from the Roman period. It is dedicated to the god Serapis and the goddess Isis. Serapis was a Greco-Alexandrian god whose cult was established at the end of the 4th century BCE. Combining attributes of Osiris and Zeus, he represents a syncretism between Egyptian and Greek religions. Serapis’s consort was the Egyptian goddess Isis, and together they had a son named Harpocrates.

The Temple of Dakka: Dedicated to Thoth, divine intelligence, master of sciences (time and accuracy), and lord of letters. This "divine house" faces north. Its orientation and the bas-reliefs of “the Distant One” allude to the flood and the strength of the inundation awaited each year in Egypt.

Begin sailing before breakfast towards KorhIngi Island*.

Visit the Temple of Kalabsha, built in... see+ Greco-Roman style with intercolumniation walls and composite capitals. The walls are covered with bas-reliefs and numerous hieroglyphic texts. The main god Mandoulis is depicted in the form of a falcon identified with Horus (son of Isis and Osiris).

The Kiosk of Kertassi is part of the remains of an ancient small temple dedicated to Isis. It was likely built during the time of Trajan (98-117 AD) by the architects of Philae. Only four columns with composite capitals and two Hathoric pillars remain. Today its position on a slight elevation recreates the impression it gave at its original site.

Beit el Wali, this small temple north of the Kalabsha pass, was built under Ramses II. An entrance flanked by two towers leads to a courtyard, then to a vestibule and a sanctuary carved into the rock.
