Departure for the tour of Heidelberg. Romantic and idyllic, cosmopolitan and dynamic, mythical and modern: Heidelberg harmoniously combines all these elements that give it its unparalleled charm. Meet your guides at Heidelberg Castle, where they will show you... see+ around the exterior of this magnificent pink sandstone castle, now partially in ruins. Since the end of the 18th century, the castle ruins have inspired painters and poets, who saw them as a symbol of the grandeur and decadence of human works. Goethe, Hölderlin, Uhland, and Eichendorff celebrated the castle's landscape, while many painters chose it as their motif. Don't miss the barrel in the courtyard. It is one of the largest wooden barrels in the world and was once filled with wine. On the opposite wall, there is a pedestal with a statue representing the dwarf Perkeo. This hard-drinking South Tyrolean served as court jester and guardian of the barrel under Charles III Philip of the Palatinate (1716-1742). Discover the geometric terraces of the Palatinate garden, the "Hortus Palatinus," once considered the "eighth wonder of the world." The garden's architect, Salomon de Caus, wanted to celebrate harmony with the city, the river, and the surrounding hills. Transfer by coach to Neckarmünzplatz, an important square in the historic center of Heidelberg, located directly on the side of the boat of the Neckar River, below the castle. You will continue with your guides on a tour of the old town. You will admire the Church of the Holy Spirit (exterior), built between 1398 and 1441, the burial place of the prince-electors, whose naves housed the "Bibliotheca Palatina" until 1623. You will also have free time to do some shopping on Germany's longest shopping street. Return to the ship.NOTESDepending on the cruise, departure and/or return on the side of the boat in MannheimPlease bring good walking shoes. To access the castle, there is a slope of about 300m to climb. The order of visits may be changed.Times are given as a guide only.

You will begin the tour with a guided tour of the Rüdesheim vineyards by mini train, during which you will discover the famous vineyards that were already cultivated by the Romans. During this tour, you will learn about the history of winegrowing in the... see+ region and enjoy breathtaking views of Rüdesheim and the Rhine. The train will then stop right in front of the historic Bassenheimer Hof cellar, a 16th-century stately home, where you will take part in a wine tasting*. A winemaker from the Störzel family winery will introduce you to three wines, from the driest to the sweetest, while telling you about the history of the winery and winegrowing in the Rüdesheim region and sharing a few local anecdotes. After the tasting, you will visit the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments, located 100 meters from the winery. The "Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett" is Germany's first museum dedicated to memory musical instruments. From delicate music boxes to titanic concert-piano orchestrions, no fewer than 350 automatic instruments are brought together here to form one of the largest and most beautiful collections from the 18th to the 20th century, displayed over more than 400 m². You can also admire the tools and machines used to manufacture organ cylinders, music cards and rollers, and music box plates. Regardless of their age, visitors to the museum always take great pleasure in discovering this unique music, the techniques of yesteryear, and how these instruments work. It is distinguished by its graceful turrets topped with pinnacles. It is one of the few German castles that, having been rebuilt after their destruction, now show their former faces. After visiting the castle, you can enjoy somefree time in the town. Departure by boat for a panoramic bus tour of the city of Trier. Discover Trier's Roman cultural heritage, its views of the Moselle River, and its magnificent landscape. Trier is the oldest city in Germany, founded so long ago that it is 13 years older than... see+ Rome. Trier's age is not its only claim to fame. It is best known for having been one of the seats of Roman imperial power, one of the great centers of early Christianity, and also a dynamic medieval city. The city has preserved precious architectural traces from all three periods. Continuation of the city tour by foot. Discover (external visits)the amphitheater: in terms of size, it is the tenth largest in the entire Roman Empire. It could accommodate 30,000 spectators. Then there are the imperial baths, which had a sumptuous interior: marble cladding on the walls and floors, mosaics, murals, and statues. The baths formed a living area measuring 140m x 250m. Continue to the Roman basilica. Built around 310, the Constantinian basilica has been in continuous use ever since. From the outset, the building was imposing: 67m long, 27m wide and 30m high. Over time, many buildings were added to it. Finally, discover the famous Porta Nigra, which was designed as both a fortress and a monument (30 m high, 36 m wide, 22 m deep). Even Rome today does not have an ancient building of this size in such a good state of preservation. Take a stroll through the city center, which is marked by the medieval era, notably thanks to St. Peter's Cathedral (exterior). Its oldest structures date back to 326, but the general layout of the church was significantly modified in the 11th century. Enjoy the atmosphere of the market square as well. Highly Baroque, in the heart of the city center, it also charms with its mix of styles. Old half-timbered houses blend beautifully with classic pastel-colored houses decorated with white stucco. At the end of your guided tour, you will have some free time to stroll around the city at your leisure. Return to the side of the boat by coach. NOTES Please wear comfortable walking shoes. The order of visits may be changed. Times are given as a guide only.
