Activities

Included
Departure from Mannheim by coach to Heidelberg. Romantic and idyllic, cosmopolitan and dynamic, mythical and modern: Heidelberg harmoniously combines all these elements to create its unparalleled charm. Meet your guides at Heidelberg Castle, where they will... see+ show you around the exterior of this magnificent pink sandstone castle, now partially in ruins. Since the end of the 18th century, the castle ruins have inspired painters and poets, who saw them as a symbol of the grandeur and decadence of human works. Goethe, Hölderlin, Uhland, and Eichendorff celebrated the castle's landscape, while many painters chose it as their motif. You will also discover the geometric terraces of the Palatinate Garden, the "Hortus Palatinus," once considered the "eighth wonder of the world." The garden's architect, Salomon de Caus, wanted to celebrate harmony with the city, the river, and the surrounding hills. Transfer by coach to Neckarmünzplatz, an important square in the historic center of Heidelberg, directly on the side of the boat of the Neckar River, below the castle. You will continue with your guides on a tour of the old town. You will admire the Church of the Holy Spirit (exterior), built between 1398 and 1441, the burial place of the prince-electors, whose naves housed the "Bibliotheca Palatina" until 1623. You will also have some free time to do a little shopping on Germany's longest shopping street before returning to the bus. On the way back, you will pass through the center of Mannheim, where you will board the boat.NOTESTo access the castle, there is a slope of about 300 m to climb. It is not possible to visit the interior of the castle at this time of year. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.Times are given as a guide only. The order of visits may be changed.
