Donji Milanovac The small town of Donji Milanovac in eastern Serbia is located directly on the right bank of the Danube. When the dam and hydroelectric power plant were built in 1970, the town had to be moved higher up. This was already the second relocation; the first took place in 1830, due to frequent flooding, from the Danube island to a higher location. North of Donji Milanovac, you can visit the archaeological site of Lepenski Vir, which is about 9,000 years old and dates back to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

Vienne Dürnstein Melk
Dürnstein This small town is part of the Wachau cultural landscape in Lower Austria, located... see+ directly on the Danube and surrounded by vineyards. Those arriving by boat have a beautiful view of Dürnstein's two main attractions: the ruins of Kuenringerburg Castle, towering over the town, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned for several months in 1192/93, and Dürnstein Abbey. The latter is a monastery of Augustinian canons, dissolved at the end of the 18th century, and is known for its blue and white bell tower. Melk Melk has acquired a beautiful nickname: the gateway to the Wachau. Anyone approaching this historic town on the Danube will soon discover Melk Abbey, perched high above the river. The abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth a visit in any season. The impressive Baroque complex has been maintained since 1089 by monks of the Benedictine order. Culture, faith, and science come together in the monastery's magnificent halls.

The archaeological site of Lepenski Vir is located on the right bank of the Danube at the “Iron Gate.” In 1965, a small Neolithic settlement was discovered, but systematic excavations until 1970 soon brought astonishing finds to light. To protect them... see+ from flooding, the archaeological remains were moved to a plateau 30 meters higher in 1971. Noteworthy in Lepenski Vir, whose first traces of settlement date back to around 7000 BC, are the monumental stone sculptures, which are among the oldest of their kind in the world. Together with the curator, you will visit the archaeological site and the adjacent museum. A short film illustrates the archaeological research work, and a virtual tour of the community of Lepenski Vir 8,000 years ago takes you back to the way of life “in ancient times.” Afterward, bus transfer back to the ship.
