Shodoshima Hiroshima Miyajima
Arrival in Hiroshima in the morning and visit to the Peace Memorial. The park features memorials,... see+ including a cenotaph bearing the names of all known victims of the atomic bomb, as well as the permanently lit "Flame of Peace." Outside the park, the Atomic Bomb Dome is one of the few original buildings to have survived the explosion. It symbolizes the city's martyrdom, but also its rebirth. Visit the museum, which displays a large collection of photos, videos, and personal effects of the victims. Return to the ship for lunch, then continue sailing to Miyajima. This sacred island in the open sea near Hiroshima is one of Japan's wonders. Discover the Itsukushima-jinja Shinto shrine, founded in the 6th century and dedicated to three goddesses of the sea. Often described as the most beautiful open-air museum in the world, the historic area of Gyeongju has preserved many prestigious remains. Visit the Tomb of the Heavenly Horse (Cheonmachong), a 5th or 6th century burial mound that bears witness to the funerary art of the Silla culture. Then, visit the National Museum, which houses an exceptional collection of finely crafted gold jewelry, ritual objects, metal weapons, and national treasures. Lunch at a restaurant. Then, visit Bulguksa Temple, a complete architectural complex housing seven national treasures. This major site is a masterpiece of the golden age of Buddhist art in the Silla Kingdom. The Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas, listed as World Heritage Sites, represent the coexistence of the feminine (yin) and masculine (yang) elements. The works in the collection of 19th- and 20th-century Japanese paintings are displayed on a rotating basis and arranged according to their harmony with the current season.
