Italy - At sea Pylos
Homer's 'wise king Nestor' was very wise to build his magnificent palace close-hauled to Pylos. The... see+ city's harbor, Navarino Bay, and the enclosed lake that was the original harbor provided ideal shelter from storms and invaders. And it was on this site, on October 20, 1827, with the help of England, Russia, and France, that modern Greece gained its independence by defeating the Turkish navy in the Battle of Navarino Bay.

Pylos Monemvasia
From the shore, it looks like a large rock rising out of the sea. Then you cross the road and pass... see+ through a wrought-iron gate, and suddenly the town of Monemvasia is before you, a perfectly preserved Byzantine fortified port with over 60,000 inhabitants. It's easy to understand why the name Monemvasia means "single entrance"! Above the rocky hills, ancient Byzantine ruins dominate the town, while beneath a maze of red-tiled roofs and winding alleys lie taverns and cafes, as well as the home of the venerable Greek poet Yannis Ritsos.
