Porto Regua
On the side of the Atlantic, Portugal's second city offers visitors a unique charm. Among its maze... see+ of stairways and narrow streets hung with laundry, illuminated walls adorned with azulejos come into view. These typical blue ceramic tile murals in the Ribeira district tell the story of its life, its past, and its beliefs.
In the morning, optional excursions: Authentic Porto. Departure by coach to Porto city center. Visit to the Church of St. Francis (interior), a pitch from the banks of the Douro River, one of Porto's most symbolic religious buildings. Drive to the Stock Exchange Palace (interior). Visit this magnificent 19th-century mansion located in the heart of the city's historic center, a marvel of neoclassical architecture steeped in history. Then, you will visit an azulejo workshop. The magnificent azulejo tiles that you will see in Porto and throughout Portugal are the result of an art form that has a long history in the country and began during the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Taking their name from the Arabic word "Zellige" - polished stone, the tiles and mosaics are painted and decorated with botanical, animal and historical motifs in shades of blue and white. A unique opportunity to discover this ancient art. Return to the boat.
Experience: Porto by tram and the Portuguese Tram Museum. With the rigging of the tram, explore the picturesque streets of Porto to the mouth of the Douro River. A stop at the Tram Museum will allow you to see a unique collection that traces a century of tram history in Porto. A tasting of local specialties will conclude the visit. Afternoon sailing. You will sail through the Douro Valley. Hauled in by the vines for nearly 200 km, the golden river reveals itself to travelers and boasts unspoiled wilderness. To tame the river, dams and locks calm its course. You will pass through the gigantic Carrapatello lock, the highest in Europe with a 35 m drop.
Arrival in Régua in the evening. Overnight stop. Evening entertainment.
