Where to sail in Sicily?
The Aeolian Islands
- Vulcano is an ancient volcano made up of several craters. Even though the last eruption dates back to 1888, the volcano still shows signs of activity on a daily basis, which is far from displeasing visitors.
- Lipari is the largest and most important island in the Aeolian archipelago. An essential stopover for a yacht charter in Sicily, you can admire the magnificent view of the old town from the cathedral of San Bartolomeo, located to the east of Lipari. To discover the typically Sicilian rocky beaches, we recommend you stop at Canneto, located to the east of Lipari, Porticello or Acquacalda to the north of the island.
- Stromboli: You can't miss Stromboli if you're in Sicily! The best plan is to take a cart or walk up to the"Osservatorio" restaurant. Located at the foot of the volcano, you can admire the lava flows and smoke rising from the crater from this restaurant.
- Salina is the second largest island in the Aeolian archipelago and the least known. It is a destination to keep in mind if you are looking for an alternative to the crowds of Lipari, for example. Once there, for a guaranteed complete change of scenery, we recommend you go to the small cove below Malfa, north of Salina. The water is clear and the beach is made up of clusters of volcanic rocks, you won't find a more Sicilian landscape than this cove!
- Filicudi: This island is unlike any other. More untamed and greener, its pebble beaches and paths through prickly pear cacti will satisfy your adventurous side and delight your eyes with the magnificent views from the hills.
- Alicudi: Stop off at Alicudi with your yacht charter in Italy, and be sure to spend a day cut off from the world and the tourist crowds. You won't find much to visit, but we still recommend climbing the island's many stairs to enjoy the splendid points of view. As Alicudi is the westernmost island of the Aeolian archipelago, you will have a breathtaking view from the heights of its neighboring islands.
The Aegadian Islands
Although the Aeolian Islands are often the cruising houseboats' favorite, the Egadi Islands are definitely worth a visit! Whether it's Marettimo, Levanzo or Favignana, they all have beautiful white sandy beaches, magnificent bays and turquoise waters. This is in stark contrast to the rocky beaches of the Aeolian Islands.
Places to visit on and around the Sicilian coast
- Tropea: Tropea, located on the east coast of Calabria, is the quintessential small seaside town where you will want to stroll among the monuments and the famous sanctuary of Santa Maria before going for a swim in the turquoise waters. Our clients' favorite, Filovent, recommends the restaurant"Al Pinturicchio," known for its excellent fish dishes.
- Palermo: There is no shortageof places to visit in Palermo, the capital of Sicily. With museums, the Royal Palace, the Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the botanical garden and the Massimo Vittorio Emanuele theater, there really is something for everyone! In addition to the cultural attractions, you can end your day at Mondello beach, just a 30-minute drive from Palermo.
- Cefalù: Discovering Cefalù is a favorite shared by our Filovent customers! Located on the north coast between Palermo and Capo d'Orlando, the old fishing port will amaze you with its postcard-worthy setting.

Our advice for a successful yacht charter in Sicily
- Familiarize yourself with local regulations: Before embarking on your sailboat charter, make sure you are familiar with the regulations in force in the region in terms of navigation zones, anchorages or protected areas.
- Documents and formalities: If you are the skipper of the boat, make sure you have a boat license to present. In addition, we strongly advise you to take out damage waiver insurance even if you hire a skipper: in the event of damage to the boat, you are directly responsible, and damage waiver protects you from any involuntary damage.
- What are the departure bases for sailing in Sicily? There are several departure bases in Sicily: Marsala, Trapani, Palermo, Capo d'Orlando, Portorosa, Milazzo and Syracuse. For sailing in the Aegadian Islands, we recommend departing from Trapani, particularly because of its proximity to the airport. To visit the Aeolian Islands by boat, most rental companies suggest you leave from Capo d'Orlando or Portorosa. Finally, if your cruise lasts two weeks and you want to discover both the Aegadian and Aeolian Islands, we recommend you leave from Palermo. Its proximity to the airport makes it an ideal base to start your cruise.
