On the east coast of the Isle of Beauty, halfway between Bastia and the 126 airbase in Ventiseri, Santa Maria Poghju is a charming village that has gained a certain amount of fame among tourists thanks toits Port de la Taverna. Before entering the village, you can already see the Serpentina fountain. Built in 1910, the fountain has a marble plaque inscribed with the town's motto.
Your walk will also take you to the parish church of the Assumption. Built on the ruins of an old church in the 17th century, this religious building has a vaulted ceiling with a beautiful fresco. The San Pancraziu chapel, the Taverna thermal baths and the Piévanie site, located near the Genoa deck, are all historical discoveries not to be missed.
A short nature getaway
The site of the Pieve of Santa Maria will be an excellent point of departure if you wish to enjoy the pleasures of hiking around the commune. This monument, dating from the 11th century, is indeed surrounded by greenery and scrubland that promise you a pleasant change of scenery. There are also numerous sailing itineraries that will take you, for example, to the famous Uccelluline waterfall.
A natural border between the villages of Santa-Maria-Poghju and San Nicolao, the waterfall reveals a wild and unspoiled environment where you can enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. Lovers of beautiful architecture will linger by the deck spanning the Uccelluline River.
A moment of relaxation at the beach
You can also take advantage of your yacht charter in Santa-Maria-Poghju to drop anchor not far from the charming beaches of the town and that of San Nicolao. In San Nicolao, you can see the beach of Moriani, certainly the most famous on the east coast. This beach has a water sports center and several restaurants. For a more authentic experience, head to the wild beach of Poggiole, with its mixture of gravel and sand.
