Koh Samui catamaran, sailboat and motorboat charter

Last updated on 8 April 2025

Types of boats to rent in Koh Samui

Depending on your sailing itinerary and your budget, several types of boats are available:

  • Monohull: the ideal option for sailing enthusiasts looking for an authentic sailing experience. The agility of these boats allows them to explore hidden coves and take full advantage of the island's tropical wind. With comfortable berths, it's the perfect choice for an immersive experience on the open sea.
  • Catamaran: more spacious and comfortable by nature, it is perfect for a cruise with family or friends. The stability of these boats will offer you optimal comfort and safe navigation.
  • Yacht: for a top-of-the-range experience, including crew, catering services and exclusive nautical activities. Ideal for customers looking for a comfortable stay with luxury services at the side of the boat.

The various services offered for your charter in Koh Samui

Depending on your experience and expectations, different options are available:

  • Bareboat yacht charter: do you have a valid boat license and solid sailing experience? A bareboat yacht charter is the ideal option for total freedom. You can set your own sailing itinerary, explore Koh Samui's hidden coves and sail to Phuket or other iconic destinations in Thailand. This formula is ideal for sailors who want to enjoy a self-sufficient vacation, with a completely immersive experience on the high seas.
  • Charter with skipper: would you simply like to enjoy your vacation without worrying about navigation? This is the most recommended option. An experienced local skipper will help you discover the most beautiful anchorages and share his best recommendations, secret coves, sailing spots and typical seaside restaurants. With this option, you will enjoy yourself to the full, without stress! Some Lagoon-type boats are perfect for this type of experience and offer optimal comfort.
  • Crew: looking for a premium experience? Opt for a crewed cruise. On board, you will have a captain, a cook and a hostess, who will ensure your well-being throughout your cruise. Some boat tours include excursions to neighboring islands as well as all-inclusive services. Travelers particularly appreciate this type of service on stays of a week or more.
  • Cabin cruise: book a cabin on an elegant and friendly boat, in the company of other travelers. A professional crew is present at the side of the boat. The cabin cruise is the perfect solution for those who wish to travel as a couple or for those who do not have the budget to rent an entire boat.
  • Transfer: want to set off with complete peace of mind? With Filovent, we offer a private transfer service to take you to your boat from your place of arrival. This service is particularly appreciated according to the reviews of our customers, who give it an excellent rating.

Our team is there to advise you so that your cruise perfectly reflects your spirit of escape and adventure.

If you are interested in chartering a yacht in Thailand, please contact us directly to consult our rates. Costs can fluctuate considerably depending on the type of yacht. Lina, our specialist in high-end crews and boats, will be delighted to present you with our best offers.

We suggest you choose our cancellation insurance when you take out your yacht charter in Thailand. It offers protection to the whole crew, unlike personal cancellation insurance or that offered by your credit card, which generally only protects the holder.

We also recommend that our customers take out damage waiver insurance. Even the most experienced sailors are not completely sheltered from incidents at sea. With this insurance, you will be able to recover a large part of your deposit in the event of damage during navigation.

Where can you sail around Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is surrounded by several paradise islands accessible by boat, where you can sail and change islands every day.

For diving enthusiasts, head for the island of Koh Tao, a destination renowned for its exceptional coral reefs and rich marine life. Its crystal-clear waters offer unforgettable explorations.

For pristine white sandy beaches, the island of Koh Phangan is ideal. Known for its spectacular scenery, it offers peaceful coves and turquoise water perfect for swimming.

Finally, if you are looking for a peaceful place to relax, the small islands of Koh Tan and Koh Matsum are the ones to choose. These unspoiled islets are perfect for a stopover far from the crowds.

The different sailing conditions on Koh Samui

On Koh Samui, the wind is fairly light and steady, oscillating between 5 and 15 knots, but it is more unstable during the rainy season. The current is generally weak but it intensifies if you get close to the island of Koh Tao, especially close to the coral reefs, which can impact navigation for Lagoon catamarans. Water temperatures vary between 26 and 30 degrees throughout the year, offering ideal conditions for diving. The anchorages around Koh Phangan Bay are particularly recommended for their safety.

Reviews of this region are particularly positive, especially for the ease of navigation, the beauty of the landscapes and the diversity of its spots accessible by boat.

When to sail?

The island has two seasons, influencing the sailing conditions and the choice of boat for your cruise.

  • Dry season: from December to April, the ideal time to sail with sunny weather and calm seas, offering optimal conditions for renting a Lagoon catamaran to explore the surrounding islands.
  • Wet season: from May to November, a season marked by tropical rains, but generally of short duration. The main advantage of this season is the attractive rates and the less crowded islands. You can thus enjoy a more exclusive experience and set off to discover the preserved coral reefs, particularly in the bay of Koh Matsum.

The best time to go is from February to April, when you will have the perfect balance between pleasant weather and moderate crowds. This is also the time when the water is at its clearest and warmest, ideal for excursions to sea caves.

How do I get there?

To reach the island of Koh Samui, there are several options depending on your point of departure and your preferences.

Direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. From Europe, a stopover via Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur will be necessary. Upon your arrival in Koh Samui, a private transfer can be arranged to make it easier to reach your boat.

If you prefer a more immersive arrival, the ferry is a possible option from Surat Thani. This option is popular with travelers for its gradual approach to the island, allowing you to admire the bays and beaches along the way.

For a smoother arrival, it is recommended to combine the two means of transportation.
