Tabarka is a coastal town in northwestern Tunisia, located 175 kilometers from Tunis and a few kilometers from the Algerian-Tunisian border. Its name is etymologically of Berber origin and means « country of the heather ».
Part of the governorate of Jendouba, it is a municipality with 15,634 inhabitants in 2004. Populated by descendants of the Kroumir tribes, the town is the center of attraction for the village populations of Jebel Khemir, a small mountain range dotted with limestone hills. Its inhabitants are now known as Tabarkois or sometimes Tabarquois. These terms are in opposition to that of Tabarquins, which refers to the Genoese who were present until the 18th century on the island of Tabarka (Tabarque).
It is a tourist town known for scuba diving (the sea bed is teeming with fish and is used for fishing grouper and lobster) and the coral used in jewelry. People also come for its festivals, including the famous Tabarka Jazz Festival. The city is overlooked by a rock on which a Genoa fort is built.
Tabarka has an international airport about fifteen kilometers to the east of the city.
