The city was founded in 1850 by Americans working on the railway project connecting the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast of the Isthmus of Panama, and it quickly surpassed older Caribbean ports upon the canal's opening.

Though pearls have now disappeared from the azure waters of this paradise, once steeped in adventure and piracy, you can still swim off white sandy beaches and marvel at the graceful dance of colorful schools of fish.
Amid the maze of over two hundred islands that make up the Pearl Archipelago, Pacheca Island reveals itself in the far north. This small uninhabited piece of land is a haven for numerous bird species that have made it their home.
