Amarante is a small historic town of unique beauty, located in the rich Minho region in the north of the country, where the grapes for Vinho Verde, a semi-sparkling "green" wine unique to Portugal, are grown. The river Tâmega flows through the town, and... see+ across this watercourse is an impressive arched bridge, the São Gonçalo Bridge, which is said to have helped local heroes fend off a French attack in the early 19th century.
