River cruises and license-free boating in Tournus

Last updated on 8 April 2025

Want to discover one of France's historic old towns? Opt for a yacht charter in Tournus and dive into the heart of its history. The authenticity of this place will give you a glimpse of what it was like in medieval times.

What to visit in Tournus

Located not far from Saône, between Franche-Compté and Burgundy, Tournus presents its authentic setting, embellished by its narrow streets and medieval neighborhoods. A witness to a difficult past, this town has witnessed moving events dating back to Roman times. As you stroll through the city, you will have the opportunity to discover the history of certain emblematic figures, the most famous of whom is Saint Philibert. An abbey was also built in his honor. Thanks to the yacht charter in Tournus, you can explore every corner of the city and take the opportunity to visit other places of interest. But before you weigh anchor, take the time to visit this beautiful ancient village and its majestic religious buildings such as the abbey church and its graceful columns with their Byzantine architecture. Round arches, mosaics illustrating the signs of the zodiac and magnificent frescoes embellish this magnificent church.

Also visit the famous Hôtel-Dieu, with its wooden-effect ceilings, stone floors and white walls. The upper floor of this former hospital houses the Greuze Museum, which has a fine collection of works by the famous Jean-Baptiste Greuze, magnificent sculptures and some archives. Take the opportunity to explore other places of interest and, above all, the unmissable narrow streets leading to half-timbered houses such as Place Carnot and Rue Passage du Etroite. The Logis de la Terre Noire, for example, will give you a glimpse of the half-timbered roofs that characterize the village.

And if you appreciate beautiful panoramas, continue your visit to the eastern part of Tournus, where a breathtaking view of the river awaits you. This will be a perfect opportunity for hikers to explore the Truchère-Ratenelle Nature Reserve, to the south-east of the town, or to stroll along the sand dunes. Wine lovers will also find what they are looking for in Tournus. Famous for its vineyards, the town offers you its very tasty local wines. The best bottles await you at the Vignerons de l'Abbaye. Burgundy wines are also worth tasting during your visit to Tournus.
