Castelsarrasin: a charming open-air museum
There's no need to go far to enjoy the beautiful monuments of Castelsarrasin. Almost everywhere in the city you will discover ancient buildings of incredible architecture. So, by enjoying a little urban trek in the heart of this majestic open-air museum, you will discover some little architectural marvels such as the half-timbered house dating from the 16th century with its gabled facade. Don't miss the rue de la révolution privée, which will plunge you into Alsatian nostalgia.
In Place Liberté, you can also discover the Hôtel de Ville, or town hall, built in 1827, with its clock signed Lepaut. Among the religious buildings not to be missed in Castelsarrasin, don't miss the all-brick church of Saint-Jean, north of rue Paul-Descazeaux, and the beautiful church of Saint-Sauveur, built around 961. The latter, which is located on the Place de la Raison, will appeal to budding historians with its beautiful stained glass windows and remarkably well-preserved woodwork.
Also note that if you want to attend the most famous of the region's fat markets, you're in the right place in Castelsarrasin. And if by chance you happen to be in the town between November and December, take the family to the weekly market, which brings together fattened poultry farmers and producers from the Tarn-et-Garonne.
