Monohull sailing yacht rental is the heart of the Azorean fleet, and it is also the most affordable option. Expect yachts from 36 to 46 feet, 2 to 4 cabins, such as Bavaria Cruiser, Dufour or Sun Odyssey. The monohull is also the boat best suited to local conditions: the Atlantic swell, long and regular, is handled far better on a single hull.

One Azorean feature explains the sometimes small gap between high and mid season: several charter companies in the archipelago apply a single rate from May to October, with no seasonal breakdown. On these boats, booking in June costs exactly the same as in August. Where to sail from Sao Miguel?

The archipelago is divided into three island groups, and Sao Miguel belongs to the eastern group. This is the fact that shapes every sailing plan here: the islands do not follow one another within sight as they do in Dalmatia or the Cyclades. Here are the highlights to include in your sailing itinerary in the Azores:

• The islet of Vila Franca do Campo: a former submerged volcanic crater, less than 10 nautical miles east of Ponta Delgada, whose circular lagoon forms a transparent natural pool. The site is a listed nature reserve and access is regulated: you admire it from the anchorage, and swimming inside the crater takes place as part of a supervised visit.
• The south coast of Sao Miguel: the best-sheltered side of the island, lining up Ponta Delgada, Vila Franca do Campo and Povoação. Black cliffs, volcanic sand beaches and the Ferraria hot springs, where warm water flows straight into the sea. The north coast, wilder, offers very few shelters.
• Santa Maria, 52 nautical miles to the southeast: the only island genuinely reachable on a one-week round trip, with a 9 to 12 hour crossing depending on conditions. Vila do Porto, the bay of Sao Lourenço and its terraced vineyards, and pale sand beaches found nowhere else in the archipelago.
• Terceira, 100 nautical miles to the northwest: the first port of call in the central group, with Angra do Heroísmo and its World Heritage historic center. A night passage best kept for experienced crews.
• Faial and Pico, around 160 nautical miles away: the legendary meeting point for sailors. Horta Marina and its quays painted by transatlantic crews face the Pico volcano, the highest point in Portugal. To be considered on a trip of ten days minimum, possibly one way from Sao Miguel.

When to sail in Sao Miguel?

The sailing season runs from April to October. Each period has its strengths:

• High season, July and August: the best temperatures of the year, air at 77°F and sea at 75°F, minimum rainfall and manageable winds. It is also the period when the fleet books up earliest.
• Mid season, May, June and September: the best compromise. September keeps a sea at 75°F with far fewer visitors, and spring offers the best conditions for watching the great rorquals.
• Low season, April and October: better rates and deserted sites, in exchange for more unsettled weather and shorter days.

The whale season follows a different calendar from the leisure sailing season. Sperm whales are present all year round around Sao Miguel. Blue and fin whales pass through the archipelago on their spring migration, peaking in April and May. Common dolphins, spotted dolphins and pilot whales are mainly seen from June to September.

Sailing conditions in Sao Miguel

You sail here in the North Atlantic, 870 miles from mainland Europe. The prevailing winds come from the west to northwest and most often settle between 10 and 20 knots in summer, under the influence of the Azores High. The northwesterly swell is almost permanent: long and broad, it does not hinder sailing but makes some anchorages uncomfortable and determines the choice of shelter. Gales remain possible outside the season, particularly in October.

Three particularities to build into your preparation:

• Depths that drop away very quickly: a few hundred yards from the shore is enough to pass 330 feet of depth, and soundings reach more than 10,000 feet between the islands. Anchorages are therefore rare and most nights are spent in port.
• Few shelters: ports are far apart, which leaves few fallback options if the weather deteriorates. Weather windows are read 48 to 72 hours ahead, particularly for any crossing toward Santa Maria or the central group.
• No coral reef: the area is volcanic in origin and sailing is straightforward, with no scattering of treacherous shoals. Do watch out, however, for isolated rocks along the coasts and for the many fishing pot buoys.

In return, the navigation marks are reliable, the marinas run by Portos dos Açores are modern, and the wildlife has no equivalent in any other European cruising area.

Documents required for a bareboat rental in Sao Miguel

You will need to present:

• a boating license recognized by the Portuguese authorities. A coastal license is the minimum, but an offshore license is strongly recommended and regularly required by charter companies as soon as an inter-island crossing is on the program. The international ICC certificate is also accepted;
• a radio operator's certificate, the SRC, for using the VHF;
• a detailed sailing resume for the skipper, listing nautical miles logged, areas sailed and the sizes of boats handled. In this destination, charter companies really do read it and may turn down an application that looks too thin;
• a valid identity document and a credit card in the skipper's name for the security deposit.

What language is spoken in Sao Miguel?

Portuguese is the official language. English is widely spoken in the marinas, the charter bases and the tourist sector. French remains uncommon.

What currency is used in the Azores?

The euro. The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal, so within the eurozone and the European Union. Credit cards are accepted everywhere, including in the smaller ports.

Is there a time difference?

Yes, and it often catches people out. The Azores are one hour behind Lisbon and two hours behind Paris. Bear it in mind for your flight connections and your exchanges with the base.

How do you get to Sao Miguel?

Joao Paulo II airport in Ponta Delgada, code PDL, is less than 2.5 miles from the marina, around ten minutes by taxi. Direct flights link Paris in season, and daily services connect Lisbon and Porto in about 2 hours 15 minutes. Portuguese regulations govern whale watching and also apply to recreational boats. Only licensed operators may offer commercial watching trips. From your own boat, the rule is simple: let the animals come to you, never cut across their path, keep a steady speed.
