La Spezia sailboat charter with or without skipper

Last updated on 8 April 2025

Why sail to La Spezia?

Overlooking the Gulf of Poets, La Spezia is the last major city on the Riviera di Levante in Liguria and is an essential stopover on a sailing cruise in Liguria. Thanks to its strategic position, La Spezia is the ideal base for sailing to the Cinque Terre and the Golfe des Poètes itself, among the most beautiful places to sail in Liguria. With a sailboat charter from La Spezia, you can explore one of the most beautiful regions of Italy and let yourself be seduced by the nature of Liguria.

Where to sail in La Spezia on a sailboat

When renting a sailboat in La Spezia, you can choose to leave from Marina del Fezzano, which offers a safe anchorage with mooring on floating docks, or from the port of Mirabello, located between Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi and the commercial port. Before setting off to explore the La Spezia coast, a visit to the city is a must. From the Castle of San Giorgio, you will have a view of the city and continuing through the narrow streets, you will arrive at the market square, where the city's main square is located. Leaving the Gulf of Poets, so named because it was loved by various writers, and sailing west, you will find Portovenere with the church of San Pietro which dominates the promontory, and the Natural Park of Porto Venere. A few nautical miles from La Spezia is the Cinque Terre Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a "cultural landscape" since 1997. From the side of your sailboat, you can see the five villages from the best angle. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore: it is impossible to choose the most beautiful village of the Cinque Terre. You will be captivated by their colorful houses overlooking the sea, clinging to the rocks and surrounded by nature. A trekking itinerary connects the different villages. Sailing southeast, you will find Lerici and Tellaro, elegant seaside villages overlooking the Gulf of Poets, and continuing on, you will find the first Tuscan seaside resorts of Versilia, such as Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio.

Useful tips for traveling in the region

Liguria enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with summers that are not too hot, unlike in the south of Italy, offering optimal conditions for sailing from May to October. The main wind that blows is the Tramontana, a frequent wind on the Ligurian Sea coming from the north. The Riviera del Levante is one of the rainiest regions in Italy, but the heaviest rainfall is concentrated in the fall and winter. If you have no sailing experience, you can opt for a sailboat charter in La Spezia with a skipper and under the guidance of an expert of the sea you can discover the best anchorages and learn the tricks of the trade.
