Liguria sailboat charter with or without a skipper

Last updated on 8 April 2025

Why sail in Liguria?

Liguria, a region of mountains and seas in northwestern Italy, is a destination of choice for nature lovers. Combining sea, mountains and culture, Liguria is the guardian of many scenic treasures. Renting a sailboat in Liguria not only allows you to enjoy a unique experience, taking advantage of the pleasures of sailing, but also to discover the many characteristic seaside villages with their houses with colorful facades and an infinite number of small bays. The Ligurian coast is in fact high, indented and well suited to navigation, which allows you to reach even the most hidden coves bathed by the clear waters of the Ligurian Sea and which are often only accessible by sea or on foot.

What is there to visit in Liguria?

Liguria is divided into two areas: the Riviera di Ponente, which runs from the French border to Genoa, and the Riviera di Levante, which extends from the eastern districts of the capital to the province of La Spezia. Always popular with English and American tourists, the Riviera di Ponente has small seaside towns, breathtaking views and some of the most famous beaches in the region. Sailing on a chartered sailboat in Liguria, you can visit Sanremo and the charming Riviera dei Fiori, then continue on to Imperia and Alassio, one of Liguria's most famous seaside resorts. Another unmissable stop is Bergeggi with its marine protected area on the island of Bergeggi, in the province of Savona. A special mention goes to the capital, Genoa, also known as "La Superba", a city rich in hidden treasures, history and evocative views. The Riviera di Levante is the very essence of the region and it is here that you will find the seaside villages that have retained their soul. Recco is not only known for its focaccia, but with its beach it is one of the best surfing spots in Liguria. The seaside village of Camogli, with its colorful houses overlooking the sea and the harbor, will charm you. The towns of Portofino and Rapallo are for you if you like social life and a relaxed atmosphere. Reachable in several days of sailing, the Cinque Terre with its five villages that are part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the destination to explore by sailboat, as far as Portovenere, with which Byron and Shelley fell in love!

Tips for sailing in Liguria

Liguria is characterized by a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with lower temperatures than in the south of Italy, and it is therefore recommended to sail in spring and during the summer season. The winds are almost always moderate and make for pleasant sailing. The north wind is one of the most frequent winds on the Ligurian Sea and often blows in gusts, especially in winter. Thanks to the presence of various marinas, you can moor in comfort and explore the region's many natural parks and villages. If there is no expert sailor at your side of the boat, you can always count on the experience of a sailing expert with a sailboat charter in Liguria with a skipper.
