Piombino sailboat charter with or without skipper

Last updated on 4 June 2026

Piombino is one of Italy's most beautiful gateways for a cruise in the Tuscan Archipelago. Just a few hours' sailing away, it opens up access to Portoferraio, the Maremma coast and, for the more adventurous, to Corsica. If you are looking for one of the best cruises in Italy, here is everything you need to know to prepare your rental in Piombino, monohull sailboat or catamaran, bareboat or with crew.

The types of boats to rent in Piombino

Two types of sailboats are offered departing from Piombino, depending on your sailing plans:

  • The monohull sailboat — the most widespread and most affordable option on the Tuscan coast. It will be perfect for experienced sailors who want to fully enjoy the thrill of sailing. The local fleet mainly offers units between 34 and 50 feet, with recent Bavaria, Beneteau, Jeanneau and Dufour models. To compare all the available units, take a look at our offer for a Tuscany sailing charter.
  • The sailing catamaran — for those who favor comfort, space and stability. Its shallow draft is ideal for anchoring as close as possible to the coves of the island of Elba or Giglio. It is the option to choose for a cruise with family or friends.

The services offered for your rental in Piombino

Four options available depending on your level and your wishes:

  • Bareboat (without skipper) — if a member of your crew has sailing experience and the required licenses, they can operate the boat. The vessel is entirely private and you enjoy your cruise in complete freedom.
  • Boat with skipper — ideal if no member of the crew is qualified, or simply to sail without any constraints. The professional skipper operates the boat and shares their knowledge of the area, the best anchorages and the seaside restaurants.
  • Boat with crew — a service included on larger vessels and optional on certain catamarans. The crew is generally made up of a skipper, a hostess and sometimes a cook. The crew handles navigation, meals and onboard service throughout the cruise.
  • Cabin cruise — you book a cabin aboard a high-end, human-scale boat, shared with other travelers and a professional crew responsible for navigation, cooking and service. Ideal for traveling as a couple or for discovering cruising without chartering an entire boat. Discover our offers for a cruise in Italy.

What is the price for a sailboat rental in Piombino ?

The table below gives you an order of magnitude of the average prices for a one-week rental in Piombino. These prices may change depending on the season, availability, the model, the age of the boat...

Type of boat

High season
July and August

Mid season
May, June and September

Low season
April and October

Monohull (2 cabins)$2,400$2,200$1,500
Monohull (3 cabins)$3,400$2,550$2,100
Monohull (4 cabins)$4,200$3,100$2,700

Catamaran (4 cabins)$9,400$6,700$5,900
Catamaran (5+ cabins)$10,400$7,500$5,200

The price includes : the boat rental and the main equipment on board (the sails, the dishware, the wifi, the dinghy, the bed linen and the outboard motor).

The price does not include : insurance, port and mooring fees, the skipper, the hostess, the cleaning which is often included in a mandatory pack, extras (kayak, stand-up paddle…) and provisioning.

If you wish to rent a sailboat with crew in Piombino, we invite you to contact us directly to obtain the price list. The price range for this type of model is in fact very wide, from $17,000 to over $115,000 per week. Lina, our specialist for the crewed & luxury boats segment, will be able to send you the best offers.

We recommend that you take out our cancellation insurance for your rental in Piombino. It covers the entire crew — unlike an individual or bank insurance, which is limited to the holder alone.

We also encourage our clients to take out the deposit waiver insurance. On a boat, damage happens even to the best sailors. This insurance will allow you to recover a significant part of your deposit in the event of damage related to navigation.

Where to sail departing from Piombino ?

Piombino is ideally located to explore the Tuscan Archipelago, one of the most beautiful marine national parks in the Mediterranean. Several areas are open to you:

  • The island of Elba — just 8 to 9 nautical miles from Piombino, Portoferraio is the essential stopover of any cruise in the area. The crossing takes 2 to 3 hours of sailing. A yacht charter in Elba is the ideal way to explore it. Anchorages in front of Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro or the bay of Procchio, wild coves such as Sansone or Padulella. The island offers a unique blend of fine sandy beaches, pebble coves and villages perched on the heights.
  • The Tuscan islands — for one-week cruises, this is one of the most beautiful islands in Italy to explore by sailboat. Capraia (30 miles), with its spectacular cliffs of volcanic origin, is a much-appreciated wild stopover. Giglio (35 miles) charms visitors with its turquoise waters and its perched medieval village. Pianosa and Gorgona are accessible but require prior authorization to anchor, and Montecristo remains off-limits to navigation within a radius of one mile. Together they form a protected national park with waters of great clarity.
  • The Maremma coast and the Argentario — for more coastal cruises to the south. Punta Ala (12 miles), Castiglione della Pescaia, Talamone and Monte Argentario (about 30 miles) offer the preserved landscapes of wild Tuscany. The Maremma is one of the most authentic areas of the Italian coast.
  • Corsica — for cruises of one to two weeks. Cap Corse (Bastia, Macinaggio) is about 60 miles from Piombino, accessible in a day's sailing. A crossing often considered by experienced sailors in June or September, with a possible stop at Capraia halfway.

When to sail in the area ?

The sailing season runs mainly from April to October. The Tuscan climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, bright shoulder seasons. The mid-season months (May, June, September) are often considered the best for sailing: pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds in ports and anchorages, and more affordable rates. Note: July and August concentrate the bulk of Italian boaters in the national park, which saturates certain anchorages.

Here is an average of the temperatures recorded in Piombino:

Air max (°F)54°55°59°64°72°79°84°84°77°70°61°55°

Sailing conditions

The archipelago is an accessible and pleasant sailing area, particularly suited to cruises of one to two weeks. The distances between the islands are short and navigation is mostly done by sight. The Piombino channel (between the coast and the island of Elba) sees heavy ferry traffic toward Portoferraio, Cavo and Rio Marina: you must keep a good watch and respect the separation lanes. Currents can be noticeable in the channel, especially in the event of a Libeccio.

Four main winds structure the area: the Libeccio, the dominant southwesterly wind, which is the most pronounced in Tuscany and can quickly raise a heavy sea along the coast; the Maestrale, a northwesterly wind, more regular and associated with clear weather; the Tramontana, a cold northerly wind blowing in gusts, especially in winter and early spring; and the Scirocco, a warm, humid wind coming from the southeast, rarer in high season.

The anchorages around the island of Elba and the Tuscan islands are numerous but often saturated in July-August. It is recommended to arrive early in the afternoon to secure a good spot, or to book harbor berths in advance in the marinas. Note: anchorages in the national park are regulated, certain areas require prior authorization, and anchoring on the Posidonia seagrass beds is prohibited.

The documents required to rent without a skipper

You will need a coastal boating license as well as a VHF certificate (CRR or foreign equivalent) for a bareboat rental in Piombino. In Italy, the French coastal license is accepted as the equivalent of the patente nautica. To rent a large unit or to sail beyond 12 miles from the coast, an offshore license or equivalent will be required. The base will check your documents at the time of the departure briefing.
