Yacht charter

Last updated on 8 April 2025

The capital of Crete, Heraklion certainly does not have as many historical attractions as the other idyllic Greek islands, but it still has plenty to offer lovers of leisure travel! Located in the north of Greece, in the heart of the island of Crete, the charming city of Heraklion attracts yachtsmen with its geographical location.

An excellent point of departure for a sailboat charter in Greece along the coasts of Crete, Heraklion also allows you to reach the islands and islets populating the Mediterranean, such as the island of Santorini, locatede nearby. And if history lovers wish to learn more about Heraklion's past, they are simply invited to stroll through the city's cobbled streets. There are a number of historical sights to discover during a yacht charter in Heraklion. Protohistoric remains, such as the palace of Knossos, await you there.

You can also discover magnificent churches, such as the Byzantine church of Aghia Aikaterini or the monastery of Saint Peter and Saint Paul dating from the 13th century. And if you'd like to mingle with the locals, who will be happy to tell you a few local stories, take a little stroll around the Place de la Liberté.

The Heraklion of yesteryear

Occupied in the past by the Romans, Venetians and Ottomans, the municipality of Heraklion is home to a rich historical heritage that you can immortalize during a short urban trek. As soon as you arrive at the port, you will be able to see the castle of Koules, a fortress built in 1523. The fortress of Koules, the church of Saint Mark, the fountain of Bebos and thechurch of Saint-Tite, built during the Byzantine era, will transport you back to the Venetian era.

The museums will tell you the history of the city in their own way, as in the case of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the most important Minoan collections in the world. It is in this museum that you will be able to observe the frescoes of Knossos. The natural history museum will entertain nature lovers, who will have a glimpse of the flora and fauna of Crete.

How to have fun in Heraklion?

In addition to visiting its historical remains, Heraklion also knows how to entertain its visitors. You will enjoy visiting the Cretaquarium with your family. Housed in a former air base, this aquarium invites you to discover the marine world of the Mediterranean. With more than 60 aquariums and 4,000 organisms, the Cretaquarium is one of the largest aquariums in Europe. Discos, bars, restaurants and small taverns will entertain lovers of parties and good food, who will sample meze and other traditional recipes based on vegetables and fish.

What about the beaches?

Swimming enthusiasts will quickly find what they are looking for in Heraklion and the surrounding area. Ammoudara beach, located to the west of the city, is perfect for families. This large sandy beach has been awarded the Blue Flag and guarantees long swims in crystal clear waters. Adjust the course of your sailboat to the northwest and head for the small village of Agia Pelagia, which has a very pretty fine sandy beach hauled in by crystal clear waters.
