Naxos is in a class of its own among all the Cyclades islands, especially from a historical point of view. Located 140 km from Greece, Naxos is particularly distinguished by its mythology, represented through magnificent architectural remains, its ancient sites and its museums, which abound in every corner of the island. As soon as you arrive at the port, you will notice the Portara, the island's true emblem. This main marble door, a vestige of the temple of Apollo, stands on the Bacchos atoll and was erected in the 6th century BC.
In addition to the archaeological museum of Naxos, you can visit other museums and surprising sites during a stroll along the beaconed paths criss-crossing the island. Kouros are among the most interesting sights on the island. They are a Greek sculpture representing the statue of a young man during the archaic period. As you explore the village of Mélanes, you will find a Kouros over 6 meters long dating from the 7th century BC. If you linger on the plateau of Traghéa and in the village of Chalkí, you will notice beautiful Byzantine churches, such as the church of Panaghia Protothronos, Venetian towers and the remains of the fortress of Epanokastro. Another unfinished kouros, 10 meters long, lies in the quarry of Apollonas Bay, the most important seaside resort in Naxos.
