Paxos is an island that is not easily forgotten during a catamaran cruise in Greece. With its pebble beaches to the south of Corfu, this Ionian island is also home to a number of picturesque villages where it is lovely to take a stroll on a beautiful summer's day.
The villages of Paxo
Some villages easily find their place on this island of the Ionian archipelago, coveted by Arab, Slavic and Norman settlers during the Middle Ages. Some vestiges of its past can be found in the village of Gaios. The island's capital, Gaios, is home to a pretty marina sheltered from the wind in the heart of a bay. You will also want to linger in Gaios to stroll along its narrow streets, known as Kantounia, which lead to small, friendly shops. But before anchored boats can enter the port, they must pay attention to the islands of Panagia and Saint-Nicolas, which watch over the entrance to the city. On the island of Saint-Nicolas, you can see a splendid Venetian fortress.
Fancy a gourmet break during your stopover in Paros? Berth at the small port of the village of Loggos, looming on the east coast of the island. The bars and taverns that line the harbor will be happy to offer you a taste of some local seafood specialties. It is also a recommended port of call for visiting yachtsmen, who can stock up in one of its three mini-markets or sip a cocktail before setting sail again.
And then there is the village of Lakka, located north of Paxos. Lakka is a must for sailing enthusiasts and those who love beautiful architecture, who will find some interesting old stones there. Its location in the heart of a horseshoe-shaped bay also makes it an excellent anchorage for the night.
The most beautiful beaches on the island
Yacht charter in Paxos will allow you to coast along its coastline, where pebble beaches and mysterious caves follow one another. When you are in Lakka Bay, pay attention to the family beaches of Harami and Kanoni. For your moments of intimacy, anchored boats on the pebble beach of Lakkos, between Loggos and Lakka.
On either side of the port of Gaios, discover the pebble beaches of Galazio, Plakes and Kaki Lagada, where you can veer off for swims in translucent waters. Paxos' only sandy beach, Moggonissi, is very popular with families and water sports enthusiasts.
