Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a Greek island that is part of the Ionian Islands. Once famous for its important oil sources, Zakynthos quickly became the shortlist destination for vacationers and pleasure boaters on a sailing cruise in Greece. And with good reason: with its beautiful sandy beaches, exceptional underwater landscape and countless rocky coves, Zakynthos really has what it takes to rival the prestigious Caribbean islands.
Swimming, scuba diving, unique walks on the few hiking trails crossing the island... a cocktail of activities is offered to vacationers looking for new experiences. History buffs, for example, can head to the Solomos Museum and discover the objects used by high society, while lovers of beautiful views can stroll through the small villages on the plains to admire the breathtaking view of the sea.
As for diving and beautiful beaches enthusiasts, they will be spoiled for choice between a walk on the pristine beaches of Zakynthos, such as Tsivili or Navagio beach, or a diving session southwest of the island on the side of the Keri Caves or the Blue Caves, accessible only by boat, which reveal an almost unreal world! All you have to do is rent a boat and set off to sail around the island of Zakynthos!
Some villages to visit on the island
It would be a real shame to make a stopover on the island of Zakynthos without visiting some of the villages that have escaped the clutches of mass tourism. For a good introduction, start with the main town, which managed to restore some beautiful ancient architecture after the 1953 earthquake. It is during a short stroll along the cobbled streets that you will be able to admire some neoclassical architecture up close. The church of Saint Denis, which houses the relics of the island's patron saint, stands on the Place de Saint Dyonisos.
To the northwest of Zakynthos lies the village of Anafonitria, where the 15th-century church of Panaghia awaits you. The village of Volimès stands to the north and is set in picturesque surroundings with its peaceful little streets leading to the monastery of Saint George and several churches with beautiful 12th and 14th century frescoes. In the center of the island, the village of Kiliomenos stands out with its bell tower over 22 meters high, forming a single structure with the church of Saint-Nicolas, built towards the end of the 19th century.
Touring the island by boat
Yachtsmen wishing to discover the island of Zakynthos in a different way will be delighted to sail along its shores, which are home to a number of seaside resorts. The most touristy of all is the coastal town of Argassi, located to the south-east of the main town. Dominated by the mountain of Skopos, Argassi is colonized by tourist shops, bars and taverns where you can try Mytzithra cheese. The village is close to a pretty beach stretching for a kilometer where you can veer towards various water sports. Those seeking peace and quiet should adjust their course for the village of Vassilikos, a breeding site for the Caretta sea turtle known for its superb beaches, such as Daphni beach.
