Portoferraio is one of our two departure bases for a sailboat charter on the island of Elba; it is located in the north; our sailboat charter base is very close to the commercial port where the ferries dock.
It is difficult not to fall in love with Portoferraio, with its old port, its narrow streets and its citadel.
This base also has the advantage of being well equipped, easily accessible and well located for sailing to the Tuscan coast and the Tuscan archipelago of the islands of Gorgona, Capraia, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri; these islands are familiar to Italian yachtsmen and you will probably be charmed by their beauty.
A coastline unlike any other in the world, coves and anchorages of dreams, these words are not enough to describe Portoferraio. It offers its visitors a range of unforgettable moments through the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea, thecultural events and monuments that are true masterpieces of this city located on the island of Elba.
A historical masterpiece
Due to the size of its population, Portoferraio is considered the capital of the island of Elba. The city was built in 1548 on the ruins of ancient Fabricia, its Roman name, and still bears witness to the passage of the Romans. Its forts and buttresses are authentic masterpieces of military architecture. The charm of the fortresses has remained intact and the city has retained its old urban structure. In the upper parts of the city, enjoy a visit to Forte Stella, named for the shape of its walls. Built in 1548, it houses one of the oldest lighthouses in Europe. A visit to the historic center of Portoferraio is a must and particularly rewarding. Historic monuments, sacred places, narrow, winding streets leading to panoramic terraces, old houses with flower-filled pulpits: a whole host of discoveries await you!

Between visits, be sure to treat yourself to a moment of relaxation on the beach of Ghiaie with its scarlet water, or that of Sansone, a very famous beach of fine gravel.
