The midnight sun, or polar day, is the period during which the sun no longer drops below the horizon. It stays visible 24 hours a day, sitting low in the sky in the middle of the night. The phenomenon occurs north of the Arctic Circle, at 66°33′ of latitude, around the summer solstice.
The aurora borealis is created when particles from the solar wind meet the upper atmosphere. Guided by the magnetic field, these particles gather in a ring-shaped band known as the auroral oval, between 65 and 72° of magnetic latitude. This is the key point: magnetic latitude is not the latitude shown on maps. Because the geomagnetic pole sits over northern Canada, Northern Norway and the Lofoten Islands lie closer to the center of the oval than their geographical latitude would suggest. That offset is what makes Tromsø one of the finest observation points in the world.
These two spectacles never meet. Auroras in fact occur all year round, but they only become visible to the naked eye in sufficient darkness. And the latitudes that deliver the midnight sun are precisely those where night disappears for weeks on end. Where the sun does not set, no aurora is visible, however strong the solar activity.
That leaves the question of what a given itinerary actually delivers. Three factors decide it: the hemisphere, the latitude of the sailing grounds, and the sailing season. A cruise through the fjords of southern Norway offers neither. An Antarctic expedition will never offer the northern lights. And the destinations best known for auroras are often unnavigable at the very moment the lights appear.
Where and when to see the midnight sun
The farther north you go, the longer the period lasts. The midnight sun runs for around four months in Svalbard, two and a half months at the North Cape, and just five weeks in Bodø, on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

They shift by a day or two depending on the year and the exact observation point: at altitude, or from the deck of a boat offshore, the window widens slightly compared with sea level ashore.
White nights, a separate phenomenon
South of the Arctic Circle the sun does set, but darkness never really takes hold. Twilight stretches through to dawn, and there is enough light to sail and photograph all night. This is what you get:
- In Iceland, where only the island of Grímsey is crossed by the Arctic Circle. Around the solstice the sun sets toward midnight and rises again around 3 a.m.; the effect fades noticeably in May and August.
- In the fjords of southwestern Norway, where the solstice day reaches 19 hours in Bergen and approaches 20 hours toward Geiranger, without ever crossing the 24-hour threshold.
- In the coastal fjords of Alaska, from the Inside Passage to Prince William Sound.

Where and when to see the northern lights
North of the Arctic Circle, the usable season runs from late September to early April. The most favorable areas are those at the center of the auroral oval, where the curtains appear overhead rather than on the horizon, setting the whole sky alight. Solar cycle 25, which peaked in 2024 and 2025, keeps activity strong through the following seasons.
The conditions you need
- Enough geomagnetic activity, measured by the Kp index. A Kp of 1 to 2 produces auroras visible only in the far north. A Kp of 3 to 4 gives comfortable viewing beyond the Arctic Circle. From Kp 5 upward, the phenomenon reaches into the mid-latitudes. Kp forecasts are published three days ahead, but are only genuinely reliable over the last 30 minutes.
- A clear sky. Most emissions occur between 90 and 150 kilometers up, with red arcs reaching as high as 400 kilometers. Either way, far above the cloud layer, which blocks the phenomenon entirely.
- No light pollution. An anchorage away from the ports is enough, and that is the boat's greatest advantage over a hotel on an aurora hunt.
- The right time slot. Activity runs from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., peaking between 10 p.m. and midnight. During the polar night it can appear at any hour.
The navigability constraint
This is the point most often left unsaid. The destinations that look strongest on paper are precisely those where ice and winter conditions halt navigation during the aurora season. Svalbard is ringed by pack ice from November to May. Greenland and the high Arctic are only navigable in summer, between June and September. In Alaska the charter season closes in September, at the very moment the nights become usable again.
Northern Norway is the exception. The Gulf Stream keeps its waters ice-free all year, making it the only Arctic seaboard navigable in the depths of winter. Norwegian Lapland covers this same area, from Alta to the Lyngenfjord. Iceland comes next, with more changeable weather and shorter clear spells.
The southern hemisphere
South of the equator, the logic inverts on three counts.
- The aurora borealis does not exist there. Its southern counterpart occurs around the South Pole. But the Antarctic sailing season runs from November to March, in the middle of the austral summer: the continuous daylight makes the phenomenon invisible.
- The midnight sun is seen in December and January, not June. It requires crossing the Antarctic Circle at 66°33′ S, which only certain itineraries reaching Marguerite Bay achieve.
- The fjords of Patagonia, the Beagle Channel and Ushuaia sit between 48 and 55° S, far too far north for either. The December solstice brings around 17 hours of daylight there.
