If I rent a boat without a skipper, do I need to have a lot of experience? Do I need to fill out my sailing resume?

Updated on: 26/05/2025
If you’re renting a boat without a skipper, you must ensure that the person who will be skippering the boat:
1) holds a valid boat license that is valid in the area where you will be sailing (in France, a license is not required if you are renting a sailboat).
2) has the sailing experience necessary to handle the rented vessel.

You don’t necessarily have to be an expert sailor, but it’s important to feel comfortable on the type of boat you plan to book. In practical terms, this means you must have previously skipped a boat of a comparable type and size. For example, if you have experience only with 30-foot monohulls, you will not be able to skipper a 40-foot catamaran, unless the rental company explicitly agrees to it before booking. However, if you have previously rented a 45-foot monohull, there is no problem renting a 50-foot monohull.

If, on the day of the charter, our charter partner determines that you do not have the necessary skill level, they may require you to hire a skipper at your own expense.

The Sailing Resume
You must complete this in your customer account by uploading the licenses you hold. You should do this as soon as possible, ideally on the day of booking. The rental company needs this so that its insurance covers your charter.
