What does "black water" mean? Where can it be discharged into rivers and canals?
Updated on: 26/05/2025All riverboats are equipped with a blackwater tank, which is supposed to collect organic waste from the toilets. However, for the time being, these tanks serve no purpose! In fact, as of September 2021, no river port in France is yet equipped with pumps to empty these tanks (Voies Navigables de France is working on this). As a result, the tanks are kept open, and the waste ends up directly in the water. This is why swimming in the canals is not recommended. If you must swim, opt for natural rivers instead.
