With 1,474,223 inhabitants as of May 30, 2014, Munich is the third largest city in Germany by population after Berlin and Hamburg. Its urban area has 2,351,706 inhabitants. Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria and the district of Upper Bavaria. Located at an altitude of between 482 and 579 meters, the city is crossed by the Isar for a distance of 13.7 km, from southwest to northeast. An important economic center, it is home to large companies including Siemens, Allianz, BMW, Münchener Rückversicherung, Linde, EADS Deutschland and HypoVereinsbank.
According to Eurostat, the wider urban area of the Munich metropolitan region is the largest in Germany in terms of GDP, at 117.6 billion USD, ahead of Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt. With a GDP per capita of 53,073 USD, Munich is also one of the richest cities in the European Union.
The city is famous for its traditional beer festival (Oktoberfest), which takes place every year from the end of September to the beginning of October.
It is Germany's second most popular tourist destination after Berlin.
The inhabitants of Munich are called "Münchener".
