Why is it important to conduct a thorough inspection of the boat before departure?
Updated on: 26/05/2025Once you arrive at your departure base, you’ll need to complete the final administrative procedures to officially take possession of your boat: signing the contract, getting acquainted with the boat, and conducting an inventory. The inventory is of the utmost importance; it must be done thoroughly to ensure you have a wonderful vacation on board and to avoid any unpleasant surprises once you’re out on the water.
If you’re renting with a skipper, they’ll handle the boat inventory. Otherwise, it’s up to you to thoroughly “check” all the boat’s components! Even though the rental company usually provides a checklist for you to fill out, it’s ultimately you, the renter, who conducts the inventory. You can take as much time as you need to ensure nothing is overlooked. If you have any doubts about how to use a piece of equipment, let the rental company know. They can calmly explain how all the boat’s equipment works while you’re still in port. It’s easier than trying to figure it out on your own once you’re out at sea!
A thorough inventory will take you about 1.5 hours and will allow you to enjoy a week of peace of mind. Indeed, repairing a problem in the middle of a cruise will be much more complicated than doing so on the first day, even for minor issues like a punctured dinghy or a temperamental anchor windlass...
