At night, where can I stop? At the harbor or at an anchorage?
Updated on: 26/05/2025There are several possibilities:
- At anchor: You can drop anchor for free anywhere it is permitted, meaning outside of protected areas or nature reserves. This allows you, if you find a sheltered spot, to spend the night in a secluded cove or close to a beach. Note: In all cases, the skipper must remain vigilant overnight, as there is a real risk of the anchor dragging.
- Moored to a buoy: this is safer and therefore more comfortable for the skipper than anchoring, but it costs money. For a 40-foot (12-meter) boat with one hull, expect to pay between 20 and 40 USD depending on the season, destination, etc.
- At the marina: this is the most expensive option (generally a few dozen USD per night for a 40-foot boat, twice as much for a catamaran of the same size), but also the most comfortable. In fact, marinas generally have showers and laundry facilities available to guests. You can also connect to the marina’s electricity and refill your water supply.
