Located in the north-east of Spain, Barcelona has one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean. It is divided into two, namely Port Vell (old port) and Port Nou (new port), which is also known by its name Port Olímpic (Olympic port). at the end of the famous ramblas dominated by Montjuïc, Port Vell welcomes pleasure boats and offers various services and leisure facilities. A yacht charter in Barcelona's Port Vell is a great way to have fun before or after a trip to the Balearic Islands or Italy. The program includes a sea excursion, a stroll along the quays and in the city center, a shopping spree in the malls and a visit to the aquarium.
The Rambla del Port leads to the Barcelona Aquarium, where around 11,000 marine specimens from 450 species (sea urchins, sharks, turtles, eels, etc.) live in an environment that reproduces their natural environment as faithfully as possible. The Rambla de Mar, meanwhile, links the Moll de la Fusta to the Maremagnum, a two-storey shopping center. The terraces of the bars and restaurants in this building offer a magnificent view of the port and the World Trade Center. Culture enthusiasts will prefer to visit the Museum of the History of Catalonia and the Maritime Museum.
A brief historical aside on Port Vell
Despite its proximity to the city center and the many amenities, the old port offers its visitors a little peace and quiet. This does not, however, prevent it from offering vacationers a variety of cultural and sporting activities. History buffs will have ample opportunity to visit the Museum of the History of Catalonia, overlooking Plaza Catalunya, where they can admire some remains spanning a thousand years of Catalan history and art. Those who wish to stay on the theme of the sea are invited to visit the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, which has occupied the former royal shipyards of Drassanes since 1929. The museum has a rich collection of materials, vessels and documents linking Barcelona to the sea.
And if you appreciate beautiful views, you can go to the Columbus Monument, standing at the end of Las Ramblas. Built in homage to the explorer Christopher Columbus by Gaietà Buïgas in 1888, this column has an elevator that takes you to the lookout point, where a magnificent view of the city of Barcelona awaits you!
Some beaches not to be missed
The walks along the side of the boat offered by Port Vell allow swimming enthusiasts to reach some renowned beaches. Between the old port and the Olympic Port are a number of beaches suitable for water sports, such as Barceloneta, Sant Miquel and Somorrostro.
Sant Miquel beach is the closest to Port Vell and attracts mainly young Barcelonans and families. It is in the immediate vicinity of Plaza Del Mar, from where you can also reach Sant Sebastia beach. This central beach, very popular in summer, also has a pedestrian promenade. Somorrostro beach mainly attracts partygoers, who will find numerous bars and restaurants there.
